Hey guys,

just a quick question. When using Google/Apple Pay, I have to wait a couple of seconds for the payment to be processed. For me that takes just a little tiny bit too long ,so my question is does this duration depend entirely on the merchants terminal/connection or is it also relevant which card I'm using? Would switching to another card issuer help decrease that time?

Thanks

Yes depends on the terminal, on my xs max it ranged from instant to a couple seconds, same with my 7.

I've noticed with my Note9 (Google Pay) I almost always have to tap it on the terminal, take it off, then hold it back on to get it to work for some reason, of course all the terminals look the same in my area so it could be something to do with that specific terminal or any combination of root/magisk modules screwing with it...

why no dark mode?

Won't usually depend on the card.  It's more to do with the terminal and the infrastructure it's talking to.

Your bank is a part of the process, but a small one. The system must be talking to a dozen of various entities, and your bank is just one of them so unlikely to change much.

Besides... 2 seconds, too long, really?

The cashier sees that dozens of times per day so kind of knows how long it takes... BTW once it showed the OK everything was confirmed by the various parties, and any delay after that likely comes from the store's own system that's slow to move on.

Have we really reached a time in our history when waiting three to four seconds is considered 'too long'?

It's more like 3-4 seconds after my Phone tells me "OK" and it's really akward to just stand there and wait for it to process when you know it's working, because I don't want to make the cashier think I'm stealing or whatever.

The cashier isn't going to think that and 99% of cashier's wouldn't give a shit even if you did want to steal. Awkward? You're waiting for your payment to process, there shouldn't be anything awkward about it but we all get that way about different situations, so I guess that's just the way it is for you man. No biggie. It's the infrastructure of the terminal and the merchant that has that effect, but as a tertiary factor yes your phone and bank do play a part.

Honestly, considering what happens for an NFC payment I think three to four seconds is fast a hell and we're damn lucky to live in this kind of age where I can tap my phone and pay for my shit. I say deal with it OP :)

Cameras have you from every angle, they know if you are stealing. If it takes four seconds, chances are it’s on a slow connection with a slow terminal. I usually hear the ding as soon as my phone is close enough, which is further than my card.. which means it’s faster than my card 🤯
