im not a pro on the subject but threads themselves is the idea of a program using one core as if it were a cirtain amount. if it was tripple one would need to act as 3 requireming more power and some speed. but only some programs even support that many threads so it isnt that common juat more exceppensive to be tripple in most cases.

gpu:axle p106-100 6gbz msi p104-100 @ 1887+150mhz oc gpu clock, 10,012 memory clock*2(sli?) on prime w coffee lake igpu

Mobo: Z390 taichi ultimate

Ram: 2x8gb corsair vengence lpx @3000mhz speed

case: focus G black

OS: ubuntu 16.04.6, and umix 20.04

Cooler: mugen 5 rev b,

There actually are chips out there with more threads per core, Intel has a collection of Xeon chips that run 4 threads per core. The reason consumer chips don't go above 2 though is because n way multithreading more or less splits a core into n parts. The n cores, the real core and the multithreaded ones, will share some parts of their processing path but can work on different things simultaneously. However because of this the virtual cores are not a direct replacement for a real one. The more spread out the multithreading, as in 4 way multithreading, the less powerful each virtual core is, to the point where more than 2 way is impractical for consumer applications.

not that is cant be done. we have 4-way SMT on certain PowerPC CPUs and on Xeon Phi. 

 

it also costs some diespace to implement.

Generally you are going to work with groups of numbers divisable by 2. 3 is a strange number to work with in computing. There are likely other reasons too. Maybe floating point unit for example. 256 is a lot easier to devide by 2, 4, 8 etc than by 3. 

They make processors that are 2 thread per core (most of us use them), 4 threads per core (IBM's Power 7) and 8 threads per core (IBM Power 8).  You can have odd number of cores, that is physical.
