Motherboard with 8pin with psu with only one 4 pin.

Skellter

So i got a Gygabyte z97-d3h with an i5 4460 and 16gb of ram. The problem is that my psu has only one 4 pin connector. A relative said that i can use only one 4 pin connector and it will be fine for some time until i buy a new psu becuase i don't have a videocard yet and it doesn't require a lot of energy for now . He did like this for a year and had no problem and he built many pc's other the years..A friend said that the computer would die.  I just want to know if it is alright to use it and if i can install Windows on it and maybe play some csgo. I just don't want to ruin it.

Most lga1150 mainboards only have a 4pin connector because they're not meant to be used for oc/K-cpus. Your mainboard is meant for oc and K-cpus, therefore it has 8pins. Your cpu doesn't allow (much) overclocking so a 4pin connection will be sufficient.

So i won't have problems playing some games at the moment ? I will still buy a new psu in the near future. Thanks for the reply

there aren't any good power supplies with only a 4 pin connector

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Probably not. You can get PSUs pretty cheap nowadays.

I build computers and networks. Fibre Optic is my only dream imaginable.

Studying for my CompTIA A+ and my CCNA, if you have any tips, let me know please!

Main PC: i5 8400, Saphire RX 570 4GB, ASUS TUF Z370 PLUS Gaming, 32GB 3200MHz Patriot Viper RAM, 256GB Kingston SSD, 2TB Seagate Barracuda HDD, 550W Evga PSU.

Home Server: 2x Xeon e5410, 64GB DDR2 ECC

Not cheaper, but a lot higher quality. I actually bought my PSU for 25-50 USD.

It will be fine since that cpu doesn't need much power.
