Alright I've been talking about upgrading my GPU for a while now. I have a 6850 that's served it's purpose and now needs to be upgraded so I can play games on high settings again. I'm trying to decide what I really want but I keep getting stuck. On one hand, I'm an AMD fanboy kind of. I really wanted to get a 290x but then when comparing to the Nvidia cards they seem so weak. I was looking forward to AMD's Mantle technology but Nvidia GSync looks pretty nifty too, but requires a new monitor (cant do both right now). I also would like to get an Nvidia shield but I honestly don't know how much I would use it so I don't want that to be a factor in picking the GPU. Now I'm not sure what Nvidia GPU to get either. I was looking at the 780's and 780 ti's but the MARS 760 but can't find those anymore. Is the difference between the 780 and 780ti worth the additional money? I love gaming but usually it's just League of Legends which doesn't require much to run.

I'll start off with this.

Mantle vs G-Sync: Mantle doesn't make much difference at the high end (from benchmarks that I've seen) and is only in a few games. G-Sync should be amazing, work with every game. But you need to buy a new monitor. However, right now there aren't too many good monitors, so by the time you can afford one, there wmay be better ones.

Nvidia Shield: Wait for Steam in home streaming

780 will be fine for 1080p and mainly LoL. 780 Tis aren't too much better, but they can be when you overclock. They're more for people who play extremely demanding games, or play at a higher than 1080p resolution.

I'd go for a 780 if I were you

I don't see the point in upgrading your gpu if you're just playing League.

@Psykomantis00' how much of an AMD fanboy are you? I, myself, prefer NVIDIA GPUs because of what work I do but if that work didn't require NVIDIA's CUDA Cores I would go a AMD Radeon R9 280X in a heart beat because you get better value going with an AMD GPU (and this is coming from someone who loves NVIDIA GPUs). I think you've got to look at what you REALLY want and not what other people want you to want (if that makes any sense and no offence to anyone). What are you drawn more to, an AMD GPU or an NVIDIA GPU?

That's not ALL I play, it's just my favorite game. When Titanfall comes out I know I won't be able to play it smoothly on my current card. I can't play COD Ghosts smoothly unless I turn the settings down and even then it's still not that smooth (but COD Ghosts is terrible and that's part of the reason).

My last 3 PC's that I built were all AMD. The only intel pc's I've ever owned were laptops. It's always been a price vs performance thing but now I don't see the 290x being a good buy compared to the 780. I think I'd rather have the Nvidia GPU simply because of gsync and game streaming to the Shield. I was hyped up over Mantle but it seems to not really be much of anything and now I feel let down.

There's no point getting the 290x over the cheaper 290. the MARs 760x2 is (to be blunt) pretty stupid. The 780 Ti is a bad value and I'd basically chock it up between the 780 or 290 depending on what features you prefer.

Okay mate, you seem to know what you want. That's always good. Just trying to look out for you as far as not getting pushed into something you really would rather not go with. But if NVIDIA is the direction your heading for, I say......go for it! :D

Thanks for the input guys. I'm now deciding between the 290 and 780.

If you wanted to, you could add a poll.
