First Gaming PC

DannyMc

Hi all,

I am getting my first actual Gaming PC soon, (so new to most of this) and was looking for some thoughts on what I've found for my budget.

For around €1200 built and delivered, from a site called Overclockers.co.uk I've put together these specs:

i5-9400F

Asus B360 board

16GB Dual 3000MHz

RTX 2070 OC

500GB M.2 NVMe

1TB HDD

Is this a decent enough first build? And is it worth the money?

What power supply, and case have you chosen? Also, which manufacturer have you gone with for your GPU?

It doesn't mention a manufacturer for the power supply, just says 500W 80Plus PSU.

Asus for the GPU and Kolink Stronghold Tower for the case.

Hmm, interesting. Slightly sketchy that they don't give you the specifics.

Yea it does seem a little sketchy. Its the only part it doesn't specify exactly

Thanks, that does look like a solid build. I've been trying to decide between AMD and Intel. My friend was advising me to definitely go Intel because they are more stable. But as I'm new to this I don't really know.

I do own a 3600 and it's very stable too so don't worry about that, it's also 6c/12t which is very nice for the future :)

That is bullshit. Having switched from an Intel i5 to Ryzen myself, I can tell you that that's 100% false.

Moral of the story: Don't listen to clueless friends.

I've just built an i5 9400f system and it's surprised me how snappy it runs; never goes over 52c with an aftermarket cooler and runs the games I play no problem.

The mobo you have chosen won't run RAM above 2666mhz so maybe you could save some money there or spend a bit more on a basic Z390 mobo and the RAM will run at higher speeds.

Not really. I'd go for at least a 1TB SSD if you're spending that kind of money, not to mention they're not using a Super card, meaning they're using their prebuilts to clear out older inventory that will be harder to sell. I also wouldn't use Intel at this level, Ryzen just makes more sense on all fronts.

Take a hard look at your storage options. You can often get a 1TB SSD for less than that set up costs, and adding a 1TB HDD later if needed is extremely cheap.

At this price point, even when it comes to performance, Ryzen wins. Intel is still the gaming king, but this is only true with their flagship products.

Intel is easier to work with, as you can throw any RAM into it and it'll work perfectly fine. Ryzen, while better than it was, is still a little more picky. That's likely what they meant by stability. So while they're not clueless, they just conveyed the information the wrong way.

False. As long as you don't go crazy with the frequency, almost every RAM stick or kit will work on Ryzen.

I'll have to let two of my friends who have had to go through a couple kits that then ? /s

When it was first released, Ryzen was horrible with memory, and that's why I don't use it.

First gen Ryzen is almost obsolete now. 14nm stock has vanished from the shelves. As it currently stands, Ryzen 2nd and 3rd gen will run fine with almost every memory module as long as you don't go crazy with the frequency, as previously stated.

How am I wrong? I work with Ryzen chips and various memory modules every day at work and what you're saying is simply not true.

I prefer Ryzen 9 instead of the i9, as it is cheaper, at least in my country. Although Risen 7 is better for the first PC.
