Hi,

 

So I've ordered some parts for my next build:

 

MoBo is Asus prime B450 plus

CPU is R9 3950x

Air cooler is beQuiet dark rock pro 4

 

Well now I'm not entirely sure if the BIOS version on this motherboard supports the 3rd gen Ryzen CPUs, so I'm thinking as not to waste thermal paste (Grizzly Kryonaut).

Can I consider just mounting the cooler without thermal paste just to see if it works, and if it POSTs, to enter BIOS and check the version?

If it doesn't, I would have to take it out and lose the paste that I applied. (I have to take it out anyway, to put the paste if it works).

 

I've checked ASUS resource site, and it supports the 3950x but I don't know if the MoBo comes flashed with the new BIOS.

It's fine to enter BIOS without thermal paste, it shouldn't overheat but your board has weak VRMs it's not recommended at all to put a 3950X in there.

I'd just use a tiny bit of paste to be on the safe side. Even if you got the smallest tube there's many applications worth in there. How many systems or re-pastes do you thing you're going to need with that tube?

 

What I have seen before when an AIO failed is that even after a short time in bios the temps can increase enough to trip the thermal safety shutdown.

Would you please explain why you do have the 3950x but only a B450plus?

Following that thinking, that would apply to all 105W TDP CPUs?

IMO it'll be fine. AMD CPUs mostly run on power and thermal limiters depending on how the limit of the system overall. Worst case, if you suspect you might be getting instability due to power delivery you can lower the limiter. e.g. I have a 3600 (65W TDP, 88W PPT) on a B450 ITX board. It isn't Prime95 24/7 stable at stock, but seems to be better if I reduce the PPT limit to 60W. It does reduce all cores loaded clocks a bit but not enough to make a difference in normal use.

Yes, it was mostly a matter of budget. So I searched what board is compatible, but I didn't figure out to dig into vrm. Yea, I guess I'll have to see.

 

I think of the fact that the 3950x doesn't have THAT high of a power draw, but I'll just have to get it and see.

Asus list it on their compatibility list so it should be ok. It might help to have better airflow in the case, especially around the VRM. If you don't hit the power limit continuously it probably wont be a problem.
