I have a 9 year old 1300W Thermaltake Toughpower PSU in my computer. I just swapped out my GPU from an RX570 to a 2080 Super, and now need two 8-pin PCIE power connectors, instead of just one. I don’t have any additional modular power cables lying around. Are modular cables brand specific, or are there generic modular cables that I can buy that fit all modular PSUs? Or, would getting an 8-pin to dual 8-pin splitter be a good idea (potential under powering risk?)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Unless you know the specific pinout of your PSU, modular cables are NOT interchangeable. Even within the same manufacturer, pinouts can vary.

You can try contacting Thermaltake to see if they can provide supplemental cables (likely at at cost), or see of someone like Cablemod has a kit available for your PSU.

I'd advise against a single-dual splitter, however for further information on that, you're going to have to discuss that with someone who knows power delivery better than I.

Old PSU that came with the cables you need, but now you don't know where to find them.

Seeing how you have $700 for a new GPU, maybe you should get a PSU that was made in the last half-decade.

The cables are specific to that model of power supply. Different models from the same brand can use different cables.

You would need to buy cables designed specifically for the PSU that you have.

Is it the toughpower 1200w?

Given its age it might be time to replace it with something new and now when you're upgrading the rest of the system is a good time to replace it.

The card won't be under powered. It'll just keep drawing as much power as it needs until the adaptor/cable melts.

@jonnyGURU - I’m not sure if you intended it, but while reading your reply, I heard it in Yoda‘s voice in my head. LOL

Also, if you are THE JonnyGuru, I should really pay close attention to what you are telling me... My Corsair HX850 arrives today. Thank you for the laugh, and the advice.

@Spotty - It’s a 1350W power supply that got great reviews back in the day for delivering stable power across multiple  rails. Thermaltake Toughpower Model TP-1350AH3CCS. Needless to say, I bought a Corsair HX850 that arrives today. It should suit my needs nicely. Thanks for the advice!

@Semper - Thanks for the fast reply. Your advice is sound, and greatly appreciated. Cheers!
