Hi, I currently have an old computer hooked up to my router, it contains basic PC components, 2x 2TB(one for parity) HDD 1x 1TB HDD 1x240GB SSD for Cache.

I have alot of important stuff backed up here and i feel like it isnt the best method i could use.

I am using Unraid on the box on a 8gb USB Stick to boot. I think i would prefer to continue using Unraid, but are there alternative base software to use where you can create a VM or something like for Unraid Specifically?

Not looking to spend much money, but if it is 100% worth spending a bit more, i don't mind splashing out.

Are you asking to run UnRAID in a virtual machine? UnRAID has it's own VM functionality. If you've already paid for it you're best off leaving it as the host OS and running anything else you like as guest.

You can use different hardware if you want to. There is better/more proper equipment but it's usually a pretty penny.

Your best option for cheap cheap server parts would be eBay. Look for second hand supermicro servers/barebone servers. You can usually get a lot for not very much. They're often noisy though. You'll be modding them to make them quieter.

I think you have your question backwards.. Eventualle ALL hardware will fail. Is your important stuff safe on unraid? Probably not. is it subject for loss on an UnRAID system, probably, the question is when?

So what do you do to protect it from hardware failure? You make more copies in different hardware.

How do you protect it from ransomware & viruses`?`You keep it offline.

There really are no "best" method. there are best pratices, which even those are subject for data loss.

The question is when does it happen?

Well if a drive failed, i just replace it.

First things first - redundancy is NOT a backup.

You want redundancy for your NAS. You want your data to available in case of one HDD dying. HDD's die. It's not matter *if* they will die, but when.

Second, you would usually want snapshots - you accidentally erase file, ransomware encrypts your files, etc. WIth snapshots you can easily revert to day before, or more - depending how you schedule snapshots.

And lastly - you want backup. Preferably on another HW. Primary NAS can fails. Data can corrupt. User error can happen. Many things can go wrong (usually they don't, but they can).

Having data backed up to another HW is needed if you have any data that you care about.
