Buy a dedicated soundcard or DAC. Onboard soundcards tend to have horrible interference. You might mitigate this a bit by turning off Mic Boost in sound settings, but you may sound quieter then...

Ah sorry, those connectors can be a little funky and again if you have other ports for that try them. If it still persists then it's a bigger issue if not then it's most likely a weird ground or interference issue

I keep seeing this more and more. Weird, I had this too. Is your 3.5 jack right next to a usb port? And is that usb port being used? If it is, Try pulling it out and seeing the result. If it changes then you know.

its next to a usb port but nothing plugged into it

The problem is in your motherboard/pc internals. There's a lot of noise going on inside your pc, and unless the sound section os not well shielded, you'll get shit for audio. I'm guessing your motherboard is one of the really cheap ones. The easy and best solution is to bring the audio decoding outside of your pc, which means getting an external dac.

A few things:

Make sure that you are using the right jacks. I>E, the blue/Pink one for the Mic, and the green one for the headset.

Sometimes these are not colored, but there is a small logo for the mic and headset, because if you interchange them the thing might still work, but may have issues like you are having.

Another thing, what chipset do you have for Sound? Mostly it is Realtek, find the driver and the application for Realtek for your MB, you can google it.

Once installed, everytime you plug in, a small window should pop up on the screen informing you of the new connection ans asking you what do you want to assign to the new connection.

If you have already done all this.. then disregard.

But did this setup ever work in the past?
