12 pin eps / 8 pin eps on z390 with i7-9700k oc

hey I recently got a i7 9700k and a z390 motherboard , I noticed that this motherboard has 12 eps pins , I currently have 1 cable connected with 8 pins,
but I am not sure if I need to connect the other 4 also, my pc is working fine although I havent tried to overclock it , I also bought a Noctua U12A
so I am thinking of overclocking it at least to 4.9 or maybe 5.0 all cores , the question is should I connect that 4 pin before I try to oc or not ,
My PSU is TX850M from corsair , its  850 W gold certified. thank you

You don't have to connect extra 4pin. Standard 8 pin EPS can deliver over 300W which is enough even for super OCd 9900k

Main system: Ryzen 7 7800X3D / Asus ROG Strix B650E / G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO 32GB 6000Mhz / Powercolor RX 7900 XTX Red Devil/ EVGA 750W GQ / NZXT H5 Flow

One year ago when i bought my PC (parts) i had the same issue, i even OC'd the 9700k to 5Ghz all cores, till 10 days ago when suddenly everything turned black, the mobo died

I replaced it with the warranty, When i went to a local shop to see what the problem was, he told me there is a 90% chance that the 4 pin cpu power that was not connected caused the problem..

As a matter of fact, in my opinion he does!

You will run out of thermal headroom long before you actually get even close to hitting the power threshold of the 8-pin connector, so it's not required that you connect the 4-pin too. It is mostly intended for extreme overclocking (LN2 and such).

Desktop: Intel Core i9-9900K | ASUS Strix Z390-F | G.Skill Trident Z Neo 2x16GB 3200MHz CL14 | EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC Ultra | Corsair RM650x | Fractal Design Define R6

Laptop: 2018 Apple MacBook Pro 13"  --  i5-8259U | 8GB LPDDR3 | 512GB NVMe

Peripherals: Leopold FC660C w/ Topre Silent 45g | Logitech MX Master 3 & Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed | HIFIMAN HE400se & iFi ZEN DAC | Audio-Technica AT2020USB+

Display: Gigabyte G34WQC

If this extra 4 pin CPU connector is not needed, WHY the manufacturers even bother to put it there and not even in top end motherboard (for those who say LN OC)

I bought a 150$ PSU for also that reason

And how could've lack of a 4pin killed a board? Board can die if you pull too much wattage through it or overheat something. Which I think is likely reason as to why your board died.

Lack of power would just instability/shut downs.

I really do not know and i share the same thoughts as you.

I just say what the technician in the shop said

This "Technician" probably said it because

1 He wanted to get rid of you, so he cooked up an explanation.

2 He got no understanding on PC tech and said what seemed like the most obvious answer.

The 4 pin has the same functionality as RGB. Just for aesthetics, and it has no actual purpose. Manufacturers include it because of marketing. Connect it if you think it looks better, but don't expect there to be any functional improvements.

You are probably right, but i bought a new PSU that have that extra 4 pin cable, just to be sure.

The previous one was outdated anyways....
