There is only one i7-6700k which is sixth gen. If it were a different generation it would say i7-8700k(8th gen) or i7-9700k(9th gen) the CPU you linked is the i7-6700k so it is a sixth gen processor.

The 6 in 6700K say it's a 6th gen CPU, so it will work.

Provided you have the newest BIOS update, your motherboard will also support 7th gen CPU's, like the 7700K. I am not sure if that is cheaper where you live, but that may be an option.

But keep in mind, don't overpay for a (relatively) older CPU, when upgrading to a new platform would be within the realm of possibilities too.

If I am seeing this correctly, the 6700K goes for 546 AUD. For that price you can go for a B450 board + Ryzen 3600 and just keep your RAM and sell the CPU+mobo combo.

though i thought that even with a new bios update that maybe it wouldn't be worth getting compared to a x570 mobo cos it would struggle to keep up with a new cpu like ryzen 5-7 am i wrong can it handle it?

I am not sure if I am understanding what you are saying. Could you please elaborate/say differently what you are trying to say here?

What I was saying, was that you could get a 6700K, a 7700K after a BIOS update for around 550 AUD it seems. While for less than that, you could get this:

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor  ($289.00 @ Shopping Express)
Motherboard: MSI B450M MORTAR MAX Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($148.00 @ Shopping Express)
Total: $437.00
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

(Australian Dollar prices)

And re-use your memory (or perhaps get new memory if your current set is under 2666Mhz).

You could get a 3600Mhz 2x8GB set of memory and still be below the new price of a 7700K or 6700K. That is not counting used market CPU's though.

nah i get you i was just saying i was worried that a b450 mobo wouldn't be able to handle or even bottleneck the cpu even after a bio update but am i wrong in thinking this?

There are good and bad B450 boards and the one I placed in that build is a good one, fit for up to Ryzen 7 or maybe even a Ryzen 9 CPU (would recommend up to Ryzen 7).

In that way X570 is not needed. X570 is really only needed for PCIE 4.0

A BIOS update is also NOT needed on the board I used in that PCPartPicker list, since it's an MSI Max board. Those come with Ryzen 3000 ready BIOSes out of the box (although most other boards do too in this day and age).
