Graphics card in #2 PCIe slot...?

NGamer

What are the "disadvantages" to putting your graphics card in the #2 PCIe slot on your motherboard instead of the #1 slot..?

Depending on the motherboard it might not be wired x16 so you lose bandwidth to the GPU and therefore might lose performance as well.

Yeah, the motherboard (ASUS Maximus XI Formula) is x16 on slot 1 and x8 on slot 2...

How big of a performance hit would it take.... ?

Depends on the card. If it's a 2080 Ti, you might lose some performance. If it's an RX 570, you won't.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

Depends on the workload and the card.  A lot of cards, especially lower end ones can’t throw enough bandwidth to saturate 8x pcie3 in the first place so it may not matter.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

The card I am looking at is the ASUS ROG Geforce RTX Strix 2060 or 2070.

My memory is neither the 2060 nor the 2070 can saturate 8x pcie3, at least for gaming.  The 2070s would get awful close though.

UPDATE:
Actually, I retract that.  It is what I remember but I’m not trusting my memory really well for this one.

Can i even do this with the Asus ROG Maximus XI Formula motherboard...?

Or does the first GPU socket have to be populated in order to use the second one...?

You should be able to use any of them. As with most boards if it physically fits.
Wouldn’t be worried at all about using the second slot.
why such a fancy board for mid range cards?
