So I want to get a bit more performance out om my computer. First off I only have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus and I was wondering if I can even over clock with a cooler like that. Next off I have a Gigabyte 970A-DS3 and I don't even know where to begin. What setting would I change and so on and how would I check to make sure it would be stable? Any help would be fantastic thanks.

Well check your temps that will tell us if it is able to overclock, so if its under 70c then yes but I would want you to push it much past 80c then you will be cooking your cpu. My i7 hits 4.2ghz and only hits 56c so I have alot  of wigle room I havent had time to push it much further I might try this week end.

Depends on your temperatures. Run a stress test and see how much °C you get. Now think about hot days.

Now you know what headroom you have, so start OCing.

How would i go about finding my cpu temps?

Try AMD Overdrive. It has options to check for temperature of your entire system and also features a stress test. If you see some really low temperatures like 20-30C or even lower, when in idle, that means that the temp sensor on your motherboard is busted, 90% of the AMD boards are like that. In regard to the overclocking, you can technically do it, tough your motherboard chipset is far from ideal, but still doable. Just also check your motherboard temperatures, all of them. You would need a 990FX chipset if you want to do some “real” overclocking, but there is no point f upgrading just for that in case you were thinking it.

My FX-6300 CPU is not supported by that program.

I like to use CoreTemp.

I generally find 62c to be the max acceptable core temp and 75 on the socket (even at stock it gets to 65c quite easy so...)

Jayz2Cents has a good overclocking guide for Piledriver chips

80C and he will be getting throttling. Try to get it as cold as you can. Start to get cautions anything past 65C.

Never use software and overdrive is broken anyways.

Always use your bios to OC. It's a trail and error method but you can get great results by being patient.

Did you even read what I said?!  I didn't say anything about overclocking with software, not to mention with AMD Overdrive...! All I said is to use AMD Overdrive to monitor temperatures and perhaps stress test. As simple as that!

Yup.

Use OCCT to do a quick and dirty test for OC and if it passes that then he can use Prime95.

And it's best to use the motherboads manufacturer's tool for temp monitor as opposed to AMDs, core temp, etc.

A number of those are off by over 5C. In my case it was off by 10C.

So in other words dont use AMD overdrive to monitor temps or to stress test it's as simple as that.
