Software to Detect Power Supply

My friend wants to upgrade his pc, but he has no idea how big (wattage wise) his psu is. Is there is a program for this that is safe that can detect his Power supply?

No there is not. SHOULD be written on the side of the PSU on a sticker.

If he wants to upgrade he will need to open the side panel...

No. The psu just shoves power into things. It doesn't communicate with the computer.

can't he open up the case and check? He's gonna have to open up the case to install anything, or even just to check clearance because it sounds like he's using a prebuilt

Only the newer PSUs (Corsair) have USB connections to that mobo has some intelligent contact with them. Best way is to either list components so we can tell how much wattage he needs or look at side of current PSU.
