If the older PC is plugged into a grounded outlet, that will work.

The ground/earth is a separate 'path'  in the PC, that will not just send power to sensitive components. It (electricity) will also take the easiest way out, so it will just go to the mains ground.

 

I wouldn't work up too much about anti-static stuff. If you periodically touch something grounded you would be fine too. It's just that people often recommend using the new PSU, because you know for sure it's metal (some cases are painted) and you obviously have it.

In reference to this video (below) and the other full video that Linus builds a PC POV style, I was wondering if the following would be safe or if I could damage something: I have an older PC which I don't really use, but I still want it to work correctly. See, I am building a new PC, but I don't want to plug the wristband with the alligator clip on the brand new PSU.

While building my new PC, could I use the wristband with the alligator clip on the PSU of the older PC, without fear of damaging the pieces already in it? Or would the electricity potentially damage the pieces in that older PC?

as long as device is plugged into ground on your wall outlet and your house is grounded correctly all is well. if you want, you can also just stuff the alligator clip into the ground port of your wall plug. touching a large metal object periodically will also work.

I would be afraid I'd hurt myself XD Plugging metal into an outlet seems like a bad idea if you don't know what you're doing LOL
