I attempted a failed update from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 10 Pro using the free upgrade tool from Microsoft. It all went well and lasted for around 45 minutes before it suddenly didn't. Whilst installing Windows 10 it stopped and said that it was undoing all changes made. It booted me back into Windows 7 and said that it had encountered a problem. (The failed installation in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation)

That itself is not really that big of a deal, I though I'd just try again or boot from a USB. However, trying for the second time (not with the USB) the upgrade tool prompted me for a Windows key. I was bewildered as this didn't happen the first time. I obliged anyways and typed in my key, but it then said that my key was not valid. I then checked my System tab in the Control Panel and it said that I needed to activate my key within 30 days. I clicked on it and Windows also claimed that my key was not valid, this is despite it working perfectly fine before the attempted upgrade to Windows 10. Can anybody help me with this problem? Do I need to buy a new Windows 7 or 10 key?

If you can do the upgrade at all, it has to be 1:1. IE Home to Home, Pro to Pro etc.. I dont think you can go from ultimate to Pro.

When an upgrade fails, it knocks out the Windows 7 key, so you need to re-activate 7 first.

I've upgraded 7 Ultimate to 10 Pro just 2 days ago. You need to download the Windows 10 ISO and upgrade that way, not the media creation tool.

That's the problem, after the failed attempt which "knocked out" my Windows 7 key, I have been unable reactivate it. Do you have a video I could follow for downloading the Windows 10 ISO and upgrading that way? I used the media creation tool because other people used it as well and were able to update to Windows 10. If I do have to buy a Windows 10 key I guess I could always get it cheap online.

I use a user-agent switcher to make the windows site think I'm running Android. This makes the page give you an ISO link instead of media creation tool links. Here is one that will last 24 hours:

i dont think the free upgrade from windows 7 to 10 is available anymore so you would need to get a windows 10 key to get windows 10

Mine worked.  I did mine on Christmas Day of 2019.  I did a full reinstall of Windows 10 Pro and I just keyed my Windows 7 Pro License Key and it worked perfectly.

Yeah the upgrade option I did on my HP Elitebook 8460p kept BSOD on me.  So the only option I could do is a full reinstall of Windows 10 Pro.  I made a ISO using Windows 10 Media Creation Tool off of my desktop.  Then install Windows 10 Pro and keyed in my Windows 7 Pro license key and it works.  No issues so far.

Problem now is that my key just doesn't work anymore. So I can't upgrade at the moment. I'll have to buy either a Windows 7 or Windows 10 key.
