Also for what it’s worth I’ve had trouble with big old monitors with my gtx970 and recent win10 updates.  You may not.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

How much more money is the 3600x? If it’s more than only a little it’s not worth doing.

The 3600x is not worth it most of the time, but going from a 2600 to 3600 is very worth it

Depends on the price difference.  Basically all it is is a stock fan upgrade.  If stock cooler is used it is sometimes worth it if the price is almost the same.

I agree that there is a cooler upgrade going from 3600 to 3600x. But there is a TDP upgrade as well. 3600 + snowman = best combo.

I am budget limited to the 2600, the 3600 is around £70 more for me currently, my plan is if I start seeing problems in three or so years then I will upgrade to a 3000 series or a 4000 if that cpu will still work with my motherboard, 2600 will be a huge upgrade anyway as going from an i5 2500k at stock speeds (Mobo is broken and can no longer overclock) and going from 8 to 16gb ram, as for graphics card my 970 is doing ok, I play at 1080p 60hz so it's still got a bit of life in it yet for me.

Anybody got any feedback on the PSU? Is there an equivalent at around the same price point that is any better?

If the price difference between a 3600 and a 3600x is even the same I would agree with you.  If you can get ahold of one.

All I can do is point you at the tier list in the PSU subforum. :/

as to prices he got you a 3600 for the same money.

Only by taking out the second 1tb SSD I have in the build, need 2tb storage and had so many HDD's fail on me and start to lose major performance and with my current 6 year old boot SSD still going strong I see the extra spent on those now will pay for itself in longevity, reliability and speed over the life of the build and possibly beyond, around £480 is my firm budget for this build.

Ssds wear differently than HDs.  It’s possible in your situation they might wear a lot longer.  HDs wear by number of hours used while SSDs wear by numbers of writes. (But not reads) If you run the machine a lot but don’t actually write to a drive that much it could happen.  SSDs can get worn out very very fast in some enterprise uses.  Boot SSDs get written to quite rarely.  It’s possible an SSD used as a main drive may not have the longevity your boot SSD did.
