You'll need a new motherboard and DDR4 RAM for the 9400F.

Is the 15 9400f no a 1155 chipset?

Please educate me on my i would need a new board,

as well maybe suggest a cpu that will work

No, the 9400F uses LGA 1151 V2 which can only be found on the 300 series chipset. If you want to use your current motherboard then you should probably look for a used i7 3770K on Ebay, the 3770K is the best and last CPU to use the LGA 1155 socket.

No it's not. It supports intel 3rd gen processors. The cpu you want to install is a 9th gen. Hence the 9400f. Go on ebay and search intel i7 and filter by 3rd gen and price shipping lowest to highest and then spend as much as you can afford on a new cpu. Then just get some ddr3.

As others have mentioned the i5 9400F is not compatible with your motherboard. The Z77 chipset is for 2nd and 3rd gen Intel CPUs. It uses the 1155 socket.

You can view a list of supported CPUs on the motherboard manufacturers website: https://www.gigabyte.com/au/Motherboard/GA-Z77-HD3-rev-10/support#support-cpu

Which CPU do you currently have?

Which graphics card (if any) do you currently have?

Not a big gamer at most want a clean quick process time for civ 6,

Hate the wait times yo process turns at higher levels

The time it takes to process turns in Civ6 is determined by how fast your CPU is. Upgrading the CPU is what will give you the most notable difference in turn processing time in Civ 6.
Gamers Nexus does CPU testing with Civilization 6 turn time benchmark, so I would recommend checking out their reviews for any CPU you are considering.

CPU: Intel i7 6700k  | Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170x Gaming 5 | RAM: 2x16GB 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX | GPU: Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080ti | PSU: Corsair RM750x (2018) | Case: BeQuiet SilentBase 800 | Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34 eSports | SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 500GB + Samsung 840 500GB + Crucial MX500 2TB | Monitor: Acer Predator XB271HU + Samsung BX2450
