Hi,

I've noticed on r/CanadianHardwareSwap that someone is selling their 4TB HDD for $70 (A 5.9k rpm Seagate Desktop ST4000DM000).

I know you usually shouldn't buy used hard drives, but is this worth the plunge? I plan to build a NAS, and will prob use this as a parity drive if possible.

Note:

I've pmed the guy, he said that it's "basically new", but i've asked him send me the SMART details: https://imgur.com/a/YjW77GI

Personally I'd spend the extra 15-20$ for a brand new one.

You'll probably be spending the same amount with shipping included anyways

and gaining the risk of damage on shipping, if buying used, depending on if the guy packaged right.

Buying new would give you the warranty, which is an ease of mind. If you are using it in a NAS

Eh not for that price, though it is about what I'd expect to pay on the used market.

Save up and buy something from eBay if you want to go used. You can get a significantly larger drive if you pick your auctions wisely.
