Hello, looking to upgrade my aging hardware for something more VR compatible...

Budget:

          I'm looking for something around 400-800 CAD$
Aim:

I'm wondering whether i should upgrade my GPU or CPU for games for my Rift S like Pavlov VR, Boneworks and the upcoming new Half life game, Maybe a GPU with 8GB, I've also been looking at the RTX 2000 series but I dont think i'd use Ray tracing much.

I'm upgrading because:

Games like Boneworks and Pavlov are struggling on my PC, I've noticed on Pavlov VR if there is a lot of action going on or a lot of characters on the screen the fps takes a dip and makes it much harder to play, which made me think to upgrade my CPU is struggling but i wanna make sure before i spend some money for something that may not make as much of a drastic change to FPS as i thought, but at the same time the minimum specs for Half life: Alyx is a 1060 with 6 GB vram so I've thought of upgrading my GPU too. When I did some searching around my CPU came within the specs of Half life: Alyx so maybe my GPU is the bottleneck?

Current CPU and GPU specs:

CPU:Intel Core i7-7700 4 cores at 4.10Ghz

GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 3GB

Thanks for the input!

Your CPU should be fine.
But if you're going for a VR GPU, I would suggest an Nvidia as they have better VR optimizations.
If you want my suggestion, buy a RTX 2060, 2060 Super, or 2070 Super. The highest one you can afford.

Thats what I was planning. I was looking at this 2060 super on amazon.

You'd be better off with a 5700 XT. No RTX, but better performance, up to 20% faster.

Does a Radeon GPU have the overlay like Nvidia does with recording and stuff?

5700xt is 5% faster (costs more) and no shadowplay

Alright thanks. I might just stick with the 2060 super then, I find Shadowplay is worth it. Also with my CPU and GPU would a 500w PSU be sufficiant? I looked online and it says the 2060 super only needs 175W. Your help is much appreciated.

It might depend. Nvidia's website recommends a 550Watt.
However the 7700k uses 95 watts, and the 2060 S uses 175. So it should be fine, as long as you don't overclock. I would use PC part picker to see what your total system usage is, and if it's over 400, I would get a better psu.

Edit: My bad, I thought you said 7700k. The 7700 uses 65 watts. But I would still use PC part picker just to be sure of total system usage.

Shadowplay would be worth it, if you'll use it.

What PSU model is it?

Alright thanks i might just upgrade my PSU to a 650W anyways to future proof it a bit and when i got my prebuild pc (I know im a normie) it came with a no name psu that I cant find anything about online so it might be a safe bet to upgrade and not risk Chinese engineering to fry my computer. If i have time on Monday ill pop it open and check the model number
