Network upgrade for Christmas

orkid1989

thats why i am considering it or the unifi ap ac lr. both are the same price as consumer hardware like asus but should clearly be better.

actually the instant is the same price as the unifi ap ac lr so i can possibly get 2 or either

im up for that in my home but need something a bit more simple and reliable for my fathers home. if the internet drops out ill never hear the end of it lol

I recommend the Ubiquiti UDM (Unifi Dream Machine) and possibly a second AP like an AC Lite.

The UDM can act as your router, firewall, unifi controller and has 4 x ethernet ports and built in 4x4 MIMO Wave2 AP (like the Unifi nanoHD).

Also mesh wifi systems like Google Nest or Netgear Orbi are very good as well.

Ah that explains why the UDM is so expensive.  I just got a nanoHD myself and the only drawback I found was until I setup a controller (not a big deal, I just installed it on my NAS) I couldn't enable 160Mhz channel width.

If you just need a set it up and forget (and don't need more than 65MB/s which 80Mhz channel width got me) solution though, just using the smartphone app to set it up standalone works absolutely fine.  I get performance through walls with this that with consumer hardware I would struggle to get in the same room.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7
