Server operating systems ?

I was wondering what free OS distributions are available that have a good GUI and also have good software to allow easy upload/download remotely,

I'm using this to create a home data server to do backups and store media etc.

What OS would be best for this ?

Off the top of my head in no particular order:

  1. FreeNAS (WebUI)
  2. Nas4Free (WebUI)
  3. RockStor (WebUI)
  4. TurnKey File Server (WebUI)
  5. CentOS (can install a GUI)
  6. Ubuntu/Ubuntu Server (Comes with a GUI/Can install a GUI)

All of them have pros & cons.

What issues did you have?

What hardware are you running?

What protocols are you using to access the nas?

Sometimes that can happen. Depends how you setup your installation media and the planned hardware you're using. Luckily you could install FreeNAS using another computer then just move the boot drive to the intended hardware. FreeNAS won't care other than re-configuring the LAN interface from the CLI menu. This type of problem isn't just limited to FreeNAS though. It's a common issue when installing almost any OS.

Best of luck :D

My BIOS didn't recognise the installation media or the OS drive after i installed it onto another device

The old system i'm using has an i5 2400 ,8 gb ddr3 1333mhz and a 500gb hdd

Not completely sure with what you asked on the last question quite new to this server thing.

Unraid is not free, but from what I have seen it is simpler to set up than all the free options. (but still not "plug and play")

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.
It matters that you don't just give up.”
