On your laptop, sign into your microsoft account and tie the activation to that.

Then on your new pc sign into your account and activate the license over there.

If it won't let you, just plug in your windows 7 key

No. As per license agreement, you cannot transfer your OEM license of Windows from one computer to another. Only retail license of Windows can.

You'll need to purchase a new license of Windows 10 for your new system.

Win7 key won't work. Those are pure OEM ones and can't be activated on another motherboard. We are not allowed to tell you if it would work to just login with MS account on new PC.

There are no cheap and legit places. Those two don't match. Microsoft store is one place, then anyone selling at MSRP or close to it. So Amazon itself, Newegg or similar stores in your area. Anything which is sold under $100 is grey market.

You paid for this key and you agreed that is valid only with your laptop - that is how this type of OEM works. You buying cheaper Windows but you cannot move it to another computer. It's not OEM you bought separately for desktop you made - this works different and is transferable even if you change motherboard. In laptop - you're not a person who made computer, so OEM is installed by manufacturer and linked to laptop.

I don't say that you made something very wrong, it's not that I'm against it. I'm only talking that you're so happy that illegal method works somehow so for me is not different that person who is happy using illegal activators. Works the same - Windows is "activated" and works fine, except it's against the Microsoft policy.

so why there is option to do this and  option to link the key to microsoft account if its illegal?

You can even enter someone else's car and start ignition if you found a key inside, but that doesn't mean it's legal.

You can always link the key and Microsoft activation servers doesn't check if it's OEM prebuilt by manufacturer (like Dell or Asus, or whatever) or if you're "manufacturer" (where you can put together all parts by yourself). If something works that is because activation servers are not that complex as you think - it's not artificial intelligence that check history of your key etc. That complex checking may produce many mistakes like problem with activation legal keys sometimes, so it's better keep it simple and rely on user. Years ago activation servers was not even enough to made your system legal - you needed special stickers and cd (and licence agreement). Now they simplify process and requires only two things - activation and licence agreement. You passed only activation.
