Coil Whine?

Here is my exact GPU.

I will state that I don't recommend it to anyone interested in a quiet PC, since under load it sounds like it's about to take flight. (But it is an inexpensive 580 8GB.)

 

In certain games under certain loads I have noticed that it will whine (a high pitched noise.) for a few seconds at times that seem fairly random. It doesn't necessarily even happen while the fans are going crazy under load...

I have (again) only noticed it in certain titles.

 

Is what I'm experiencing a "coil whine?" 

Is there a simple solution like greasing an element that could mitigate the issue?

Coil whine can occur when power is drawn by huge amount. If it goes from 50w to 250w power draw is seconds it could happen. But its not that normal. You should try to update drivers, update bios, make custom fan curve, or rma the card

Thanks for the input! I'll double check that I've got the most recent drivers/bios when I get home. 

 

I haven't messed too much with the curve. (I believe I ended up setting it to decide on its own.) But I would love to get more into the BIOS side of my build.

 

Would noise level be something Powercolor would accept for RMA?

If you have:

the check of the bought gpu

the model number

your name

 

They will accept it

@SavageNeo and just to cover my bases here, is there any situation where coil whine is due to something like poorly lubricated hardware? Or it is exclusively due to power draw?
