Hi guys

So I just built a Core2Duo rig from a  smashed up case with a motherboard with an e6600 I saw lying in the trash while I was walking home from school. (I asked the guy who owned it if I could take it first of course) I put an old HD7750 in it, got it a PSU and put in 2GB of DDR2. I put Windows XP SP3, Linux Mint and Windows 7 on a HDD and it works perfectly for old games like Left4Dead and streaming HD video, but only in XP and Linux. It struggles with everything in Windows 7. I believe the CPU and GPU can handle Win 7 just fine, but according to resource monitor the RAM usage is at 1.5GB at the least at all times, and the PC just gets unusable when I try to open anything more than a text based website.

Do you think a RAM upgrade to 4 or 8GB would make this PC more usable in Win 7?

Sorry for the long post and thanks for your advice :)

Yes 4gb of ram is minimal for running windows 7+, for me atleast. 8gb is good to have and good for light gaming. The cpu is not the best, but it can run windows and light games fine with good amount of ram

Which motherboard does it have?

Used Core 2 Quad CPU-s are extremely cheap, and DDR2 RAM also is. You could run a Q8400 and 8GB of RAM reletively cheap.

Should handle Win7 just fine with 8gb of ram - Use to have exactly that setup with E6600@4.0ghz on intel stock cooler and stock volt, 2x4gb - 800mhz and Geforce 8800 Ultra ?

Some of the old prebuild system had limitations how much ram you can use, try to do some research before you invest any money in it.

Holy crap 4Ghz

Sadly I don't have an overclockable motherboard. I can only imagine the heat though haha

Yeah my board is from an HP XW4400

It can only take up to 2GB of regular DDR2. It needs ECC DDR2 for more, up to 8GB

Heat, hahaha, It was cool as a breeze.. 65nm. It ran on stock voltage, so not much more than stock 2,4ghz.

8800 ultra was. Running crysis on max settings @1440p would heat it up to 105C with stock cooler changed it for a accelero xtreme 8800,

ran about 80c if I recall correctly:
