if it's cheaper to use 3 x 4TB, should i do that?

go with the 3 drives. It offers more space for a lower price.

Hello,

I am going to build my first NAS soon, probably using Unraid.

I could either buy 3 x 4TB drives and use one as parity, or 2 x 6TB drives (one in mirror).

it is about £20 more expensive to use the two drives instead of three.

the other difference is that the 3 x 4tb drives are at 5.9k RPM, whilst the 6TB are at 7.2K.

I'm planning to use this as a server to store backups so speed is not necessarily a concern, while noise is.

is there an advantage to using three or only using two?

thanks. :D

the slower drives are going to be quieter can you put the 3 drives in a raid 5?

unraid doesn't use traditional raid apparently, but yes i can do the equivalent

usually they offer the best $/gb. right now in the US it looks like seagates Barracudas in 6tb and 8tb offer the lowest. For proper nas it is WD red 6tb

yeah, with what was mentioned either 3 4TBs or two 6TBs mirrored, the mirrored is going to be 6TBs (obviously less after formating ect.) with my rough calculation 3 4TBs are going to be around 7TBs (this is based on rough calculation of my raid 5 setup)

Yep! It is the cheapest out there, the Seagate Constellation also has a low $/gb and it is worth to consider as it was the NAS drives product line from Seagate.
