PSU Question

For a new build, I was planning on re-using my PSU (Corsair VS550), but I was thinking on using a MicroATX form factor case. Would the PSU fit in it?

If that case fits ATX PSU's, sure.

That should be found on the product page of the case you're going for. Keep in mind the mATX form factor of the motherboard doesn't dictate the size of PSU (which is usually ATX and sometimes the smaller SFX).

99% mATX cases fit ATX PSUs (there's only SFX PSUs that are smaller), what's your case ? But my concern are mainly for the PSU itself, it's not very good, if you don't have any dedicated GPU then it's fine but with any GPU i'd recommend getting smth better.

My GPU is a MSI GeForce GTX 770.

Yeep, that's 200W GPU, get a new PSU. Do you plan to upgrade it (GPU) some day ?

in my experience a lot of mITX require SFX PSUs. 

SFX PSU are much more expensive, because of the limited space

It's mATX tho, not mITX, most mITX cases require SFX PSUs, yeah.

you are right i misread. still might be useful depending how small he wants to go, the chart will give him an idea on the PSU requirements based on the case size.

 

make sure the case has airflow, as you will need to move more air with the limited space

Thank you, but the price is rather steep for a case. I will admit the depth thing isn't an absolute must.

while the PSU isnt the best its fine with that GPU. 550 watts is fine for that graphics card. 

 

better PSU would support modular cabling and higher efficiency rating (80 white plus is very low).

I personally wouldnt upgrade the PSU until your next refresh.

around 80$ would net you a really good PSU that would last years. and the VS isnt great for a modern system. tho its perfectly servicable.

Hmm, do you think it's a good idea to upgrade the PSU to 650W if I decide to keep the GPU?

No, if you're upgrading out of your current PSU there would be FAR better models to buy that would cost the same or just lightly more than a 650W Corsair VS series would.  The general idea is that this situation isn't bad, but it isn't ideal long-term for newer GPUs, for any newer GPU you'd be better served by a more robust, modern PSU that has better protections/performance.

It's not about wattage, it's just that Corsair VS isn't ideal for anything more powerful than GT1030 and GTX770 are very hungry GPU, there's a good chance that it simply wouldn't work well (ripple and stuff). Regardless if whether it's okay to buy used GPUs or not (it's straight no in my book).
