Hi there,

I am planning to build my first PC. I will do a lot of general productivity work (big word documents and excel spreadsheets) and some occasional gaming and 3D modelling on this PC. I don't play a lot of games but when I do play games I play some very graphics intensive games such as the new Battlefields, Planetside 2, Squad, Arma 3 and Pubg. Also play mmorpg's every once in a while. I desire to play these games at high to ultra graphics settings and reach over 60fps. On my old laptop (an Alienware 13 from 2015 with a gtx 860m) games ran reasonably well, but when playing e.g. Planetside 2 I had to put my graphics to low and still barely reached 40+ fps. I know that Planetside 2 is very badly optimised (although the developers are improving this), but you should get what I am saying.

To meet all these needs I put together this PC:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor

MOTHERBOARD: ASRock B450M PRO4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard

RAM: Patriot Viper Steel 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory

SSDWestern Digital Blue 500 GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive

GPU: XFX Radeon RX 590 8 GB FATBOY OC+ Video Card
CASE: Cooler Master MasterBox Q300L MicroATX Mini Tower Case

POWER SUPPLY: Corsair CXM 550 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply

TWO CASE COOLERS: ARCTIC P12 Silent 24.1 CFM 120 mm Fan

I picked the Ryzen 5 2600x as it seemed to be the best bang for the buck, being very cheap and still giving a lot of performance. The ASRock B450M Pro4 was my first choice motherboard as it was also reasonably priced and has a four fan headers in total, meaning that I can connect my case fans (3 in total: 1 included in case, 2 bought extra) straight to the motherboard. The ram is cheap and fast. The SSD is also cheap, holds enough storage for a start (I can gear up on this later on). The case looks good and is quite small. I don't want my case to take up too much room as I will use this in college. My power supply is cheap , 80+ bronze certified and provides enough power for the setup. The coolers are also a good bang for the buck, being very quiet.

I will most likely not purchase the XFX Radeon Rx 590 8GB, but instead wait for the RX 5500 to come out. I saw that the 4GB model of the RX 5500 runs about as fast as the Radeon RX 590 8GB, but is meant to be 25% cheaper.

My build is meant to be no more expensive than 700 EUR. I am from Germany and hence I will order all my parts in Germany. This is important as some parts that are quite cheap in America are actually very expensive in Germany and vice versa.

This current build is

€662.86

If I can go cheaper than this and still get some great performance I would gladly do that, but I do not want to sacrifice much performance in context of the tasks that I want this machine to do.

What do you think about this build? I am open to any suggestions and edits in order to perfect the build.

Also, what monitors do you suggest with this?

Many Thanks in advance.

The memory could be iffy.  It says “cas 16” but Doesn’t list the full cas number.  I’ve seen “cas 16” memory where all the numbers after 16 were much much higher. Above 20.

As to the monitor 1080p or 1440p?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

It looks good to me, I'm sure someone could probably give there hindsight on this better than I can. However, overall it looks good. The only way I could see your improving upon the price is downgrading to lower stuff obviously.

My Rig:

CPU: Intel i5 2500k 4 Cores, 4 Threads @ 4.5ghz ( asus uefi regulates BIOS and adjusts it, there is no manual option, so I can't get any higher than 4.5, but I theoretically should be able to get higher once I get a voltage "changeable" mobo

MOBO: Asus P8Z68 LE

RAM: Kingston HyperX Predator 2133mhz ddr3 2x8 16GB

GPU: GTX 980 TI 150+ core, 100-150 ( I forgot )+ mem ( OC )

HDD: 500GB 3D MLC Samsung SSD ( soon ) + 2tb 7200rpm Seagate Constellation ES.2 SAS / LSI MegaRaid MR Raid/SAS Controller

CASE: Phanteks P350X

OS: Windows 10 64-bit / Void Linux

PERIPHERALS: IBM Model M 1984, Logitech G703 Mouse, Logitech G502 Mouse, Philips SHP9500 w/ V-Moda Boom Pro hooked up to my Sony AMP ( forgot model name, to lazy to find out )

Laptop: Gateway P-7805u FX

CPU: 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 2c/2t

RAM: 8GB DDR2 1066mhz sodimm

GPU: Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTS

HDD: 320GB 7200rpm hard drive 2.5"

SSD: Kingston A400 250GB SSD

Thanks for the reply! I think 1440p would probably be better. In terms of the refresh rate anything above 75 Hz or so would be fine. It should be a solid option for gaming and daily productivity.

while 1440p will be good for productivity, a 5500 would struggle with most titles in 1440. so you will either have to render at 1080p and upscale using RIS (which reviews praise as quite effective), or settle for lower fps.

Thanks for the reply! How do you think this will handle with the games that I am aiming to throw at it and 3D modelling software such as Cinema 4D or Blender? Do you reckon that I should use a cheaper motherboard if I was to go cheaper?

Ok nice. I am happy to downscale my resolution in games it's just nice to do work and 3D renders in 1440p resolution. Do you reckon the 5500 and the rest of the build will handle the games and 3D rendering programs that I am aiming to throw at it? Do you have any monitors that you would recommend?

i don't know much about productivity software, but it should be ok with games. in newer titles such as cyberpunk you might struggle to more than 60fps at 1080p, but the lighter games should be OK.

in terms of monitors, if you're ok with 75Hz, Acer Nitro VG240YU is a good option. 1440p 144hz monitors start from about 350 euros.

Alright, thanks for the help. Do you think that its a good idea to wait for the AMD radeon rx 5500 to come out before purchasing the build as it seems to be a pretty good fit to me?

unless you can get good deals on today's cyber monday for the different components, I'd say you should wait, prices might drop a bit on the rest of the components. and you might see price drops on the gpu's, once the 5500 launches, so you may be able to land a 1660 super or something for 200 euros.

Wow, that would be so good. I just recently saw multiple YouTube videos from a couple of weeks ago talking about how "now is the time to build a gaming pc". Hence, I started to get a bit nervous trying to buy parts ASAP. It's nice to know that price will keep dropping with the release of the RX 5500. A 1660 Super under 200 EUR would be a crazy bang for the buck and I would definitely grab that if the price drops like that.

well, don't put all you hopes up on just what I say. I'm no expert on the market. but in general, it's not a good strategy to buy parts and not use them for a few months, you can't even test if they work or not .

Alright, so you think I should just wait until the 12th of December (release of the AMD Rx 5500) ?

It is listed as 16-18-18-36 on the Patriot website.
