Can I power my secondary display using my internal PSU?

Jillorval

Hi Guys

I'm currently building my new rig in a mATX case and would like to attach a secondary display on it (that I would use as a primary when in a LAN).

Of course, the best way for me to power up that display (a salvaged laptop part with a controller board) would be to be able to use the PSU that I'd like to buy :

Corsair RMx (2018) 750 W 80+ Gold

Is that possible, and if so how?

Thanks :)

The power supply outputs 12v , 5v and 3.3v - it doesn't care what you connect to it.

A laptop display will not consume more than 10-30 watts (depends on brightness), which is really low for a power supply.

What you have to do is figure out the voltage that controller board needs and what connector it has.

If it's 12v you're good to go, if not you may have to get an adjustable dc-dc converter powerful enough for the controller.

You can buy some extension or adapter cable with a molex or a sata connector at one end, cut the extension/adapter cable in the middle and now you have the 12v , 5v and ground wires. You could solder them to the input points of the controller, or you could get the connector that goes into the controller and connect the wires.

The only hiccup I'm seeing is the controller board itself. If it only takes a single cable with the display data and power, then it's likely a proprietary job and you have to make your own cable to split it up, assuming you can figure out what each pin does.

If you can figure out what the controller board itself takes as inputs, you can find the answer to your question.

Well it looks like it draws 12 volts, 2 Amps or so, with an HDMI DVI VGA input (the standard controller boards found on ebay). I do know the color codes of the outputs of PSUs (the Ketchup-Mayo-Mustard cables), but as the Corsair RMx 750 is fully modular, I guess I'll have to find a good color coding of that

Just get a sata extension , or sata - molex , or molex - pci-e adapters

sata extension :

cut wires in the middle ... yellow is 12v, black is ground, red is 5v , orange is 3.3v

molex to sata or 2x molex : https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16812119239?Item=N82E16812119239&Description=sata to molex&cm_re=sata_to_molex-_-12-119-239-_-Product

cheaper: https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16812423186?Item=N82E16812423186&Description=sata to molex&cm_re=sata_to_molex-_-12-423-186-_-Product

cut the sata/molex  connectors and leave just molex female , you're left with wires ... yellow is 12v
