Help with conditional statement in Java

I am in the process of writing an algorithm and whenever I get to the if statement it never steps into it even if it meets the criteria that it equals 1.

for (int j = 0; j < (binaryChars.length); j++) {

            if(binaryChars[j] == 1) {
                lightBulbArray[j] = 1 - lightBulbArray[j];

                System.out.println(lightBulbArray[j]);

                if(isOne(lightBulbArray)){
                    lightSwitchState = true;
                    System.out.println("The light bulb is on");
                    return;
                }

            }
        }

Would be helpful if we could see the type of "binaryChars", "lightBulbArray" and the contents of the method "isOne". Also, which if statement? I see two of those

I'm assuming binaryChars is a "char[]". In that case you probably want to compare to the character '1' and not the number 1.

binaryChars[n] == '1'

The character '1' is equal to number 49 (Its ASCII code).

as @Eigenvektor said, you appear to be comparing a char to an int. That's not going to work. You probably want to be comparing the char to '1' (the char 1 is different from the int 1) not 1.

I'm assuming your question was about the first if statement and not the second?

I'm assuming binaryChars is a "char[]". In that case you probably want to compare to the character '1' and not the number 1.
binaryChars[n] == '1'
The character '1' is equal to number 49 (Its ASCII code).

You don't compare the array to '1', you compare an individual character (i.e. char[n]) to '1'.

Also note '1', not "1".

If you know you are going to be comparing char's with numbers, the ASCII table has a useful feature. If you add 48 to the integer, you will get the ASCII value of the single digit character you're trying to compare to. One of the techniques from my assembly skills.

Case in point. You have an int = 1 (raw 1), and a char = 1 (ascii 1). int + 48 = 1 (ascii).

There must be a more Java way of doing this that I don't remember. Also, this trick will only work with single digits (obviously), you need more techniques to compare multi digit numbers manually .
