Can i use a gtx 1080 as an external gpu?

VRfux

I want to buy a gtx 1080 since its cheaper when rtx came out, but i don't have enough money to buy a pc so i thought to just use my laptop ( asus x450j , core i7 something , 12gb ram , gt940mx ) and connect the gpu using a PCle port and using a xcsource v8,4 exp gdc laptop internal. Can i connect my gtx1080?

If your laptop can support it can work, but your laptop has to support it. Most laptops that support External GPUS require  a Thunderbolt connector, as most external docks run through that.

Otherwise its really not worth buying a GPU to run externally if you dont already have it.

You're not going to get anywhere near GTX 1080 performance. I wouldn't bother. You could probably build a budget PC with a lower end video card that would get the same performance as the GTX 1080, for the same price, and save your laptop.

Check your local listings. Plenty of stuff around normally.

Facebook marketplace has a lot of deals. One guy near me had a 4790k, 16gb of ram and a board for $250. Plenty left over for a case, psu and ssd.

Yeah, probably. If you live near a microcenter you can get a 2700x combo for about ~180. All in all that would out you around the $400 mark.

ask me about my homelab

cheap and easy cable management is my fetish.

Only if your laptop has thunderbolt 3, and even then, gpu enclosures are expensive and you loose some graphics performance. If you can sell your laptop, I would definitely try that and then build a budget gaming rig. $400 should be enough to work with a 1080.

As to whether you can take your cpu and put in in a desktop, the answer is probably no unless your laptop's cpu is socketed.

Cheaper to get a GAMMAXX 400, and it's got the same cooling performance.
