Is 1440p Gaming at high refresh rate feasible on RX580? (so I can choose a Display)

Emanuil Georgiev

Hi all,

Wondering what monitor should I upgrade to in the upcoming Black Friday deals.

This topic is kind of continuation on my "What should I upgrade next" topic, where it became obvious that basically I need to switch out most of my hardware (CPU, MB, RAM, Case, PSU ...) which I'm not going to do soon.

So I decided to upgrade from my AOC e2350Sda 60Hz TN Display.

So the question is: Based on my current system, and the fact that I will probably not upgrade the rest of the PC in the next year or so, is it worth buying 1440p 144 HZ Free-Sync monitor? Or save the money and buy a good 1080p 144 Free Sync with VA for much less money.

For sure 1440p will look better, and will allow for 27" size, but my current complaint is with Monitor quality, screen tears and stuttering.

I play FPS(Doom 2016, Overwatch, Tomb Rider, Borderlands), but also stuff like Everspace, Children of morta, LoL, SC2 and Diablo 3.

Will my rig even go High FPS on 1440p?

Probably by the time I upgrade the GPU the prices of 1440p gaming would have dropped a lot to merit a new Display upgrade.

As for budget: I really do not see myself dishing out too much. For 1080 (as I'll eventually need to replace it) Probably around 200-250 EUR(USD whatever), and 300-350 if I decide to go to 1440p.

Current Setup is:

Motherboard:   ASUS B85M-E
CPU:                Intel Core i5-4670 @3.40GHz
RAM:          2x  Kingston - KVR16N11S8/4 4GB 1Rx8 512M x 64-Bit PC3-12800 CL11 240-Pin DIMM
                   1x  Hyper-X Fury - HX316C10FB/8 8GB 1G x 64-Bit DDR3-1600 CL10 240-Pin DIMM

GPU:                ROG-STRIX-RX580-O8G-GAMING (Had a R9 270, but it crapped out and had to change it before the current lineup came out)

Storage:     1x  Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB
                   1x  WDC WD1003FZEX-00MK2A0 -  1TB Black

Peripherals:

Monitor: AOC e2350Sda

Keyboard: G710+

Mouse: Razer Copperhead

Maybe with lower settings, though you won't really hit 144hz unless you really knock it down.

1080p on a 27" monitor never looks good.

Yeah, this what I'm reading mostly. So i'm looking at 24.

What should I be looking for then? In a 1080p 144Hz?

Something IPS, or if you can't afford that, VA. I think that narrows it down to like 4 or 5 options, and only one or two of them are IPS.

Check this out. :)

Yeah, I saw it a few hours ago and am still re-watching it :D And comparing prices.

Considering how much the good 1440p cost (way out of my preferred budget) and the fact that with the current rig I will not be able to drive a lot of FPS at 1440p ... so sticking to 1080p gaming it is.

I think I'm heading to the LG 27GL650F-B - Currently I find it for around 310 USD, which is 50ish USD lower than the ASUS.

Also - I found a good deal for a 24GL600 - like 185 USD, but it's a TN, soooo I'll pass. Considering that in the near future this monitor may end up my main media player for a living room till I scruff up the money for a good TV.

But here is the problem, didn't most people say 1080p - 27 inch is not good? I sit pretty far back from my monitor I doubt I'll have a problem with it ...
