I'm new to the gaming side of PC's. I used to play video games as a kid but stopped playing right around the time the PS2 came out. I'm looking to play pc games to kill time before bed, but every game I try are so complex to me. I really like that games have such high graphics nowadays, but the mechanics of the games are too complex for my limited understanding. Can you recommend games that are first person and open world but that are simple. My main set back with nowadays games is that they require you to learn so many different stuff just to get through the game. No 2D or retro games please. I want to get into advanced games, but I need something easy to start off with. Thank you for any suggestions.

Mmm...simple FPS and open world together, or just recommendations for both?

Doom's pretty simple, has been for decades across its series.  Fallout New Vegas has a few more systems to learn in it not sure if you'd consider it retro or not.  The Outer Worlds is recent and fun but is like Fallout in its slight complexity.

The Borderlands series is probably the simplest recent game that's FPS and open world and pretty fun to play.  It has some inventory management and leveling mechanics but they're fairly easy to figure out.  First one had kind of a meh story but the others are good.

Minecraft - Free.

Firewatch - Hits $4.99 during most major sales.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter - Absolutely beautiful and hits $2.99 to $3.99 on GOG during most major sales.

Skyrim - As simple of an RPG as it gets. Special Edition is gorgeous without mods. Hits around $12-$13 just not as frequently. Should be pretty low on Christmas.

Oh yeah, Minecraft and Firewatch have a lot to explore...though when I see FPS I immediately tie that with shooters because...well...that's the acronym meaning, right?

That's the meaning of FPS, yes. But where did you see FPS? OP asked to recommend first person open world games that are simple.

Maybe I read it wrong initially or it was edited.  I'm willing to own it either way. I've slept since I made my first reply without quoting the OP.
