I've been planning a build and people keep saying that the psu is overkill. I chose a 750, which yes, I know is far more power than necessary. When asked what others would use they offer the 650 or 550, for essentially the same price. So what's the deal? why not just get a 750 if it's the same price? Is there such thing as too much?

The 750w is good for future proofing.  Also note you don't draw all that power only like 150watts usage avg in desktop and if things get hardcore or you play a game it will go near 400watts.  So you can actually SLI which I don't recommend as its dead and nVidia knows it so do LTT peeps.

There's more to a PSU than the wattage. Getting a high wattage but crappy PSU makes no sense when you could have gotten a better lower wattage PSU.

Getting a higher wattage single rail PSU will also be detrimental to the safety, because that's inherent to single rail PSUs. That's not an issue with multi rail PSUs.

:)

Eh, a little bit maybe. If you have a 750W PSU and your system never even sniffs 500W under full load, you're well south of the peak efficiency curve and burning more power than you need to. But we're talking on the order of pennies per month here, so not a big deal.

The bigger issue is quality. If you can get your hands on a 750W Thermaltake Lite Power for the same price as a 550W Corsair CXM, always go for the CXM. The Lite Power line are basically time bombs. Any time you can get a higher-wattage PSU for the same price or less than a considerably lower-wattage one, ask why.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Not true, a PSU has to be at it's rated efficiency at anything above 20% load, and iirc they're most efficient at around 50% load...so he'd be right in the sweet spot with a 750w unit if that's what he's going for.

no , wattage doesn't really matter in terms of having to much , only too little

kinda, depending on the rail configuration, there is something that is called "too much"

singlerail PSUs at 750w and above arent ideal.

depends if there is a quality difference between the units.
