love unraid but need something diffrent

intertan

in the 12+ years I have used unraid it has been solid. I am running into some bottlenecks lately causing me to look at an alternative option. It's all to do with the unraid ecosystem. like transferring files to a share that is also requesting data. I transfer 2-3tb in one shot.

I have known about freenas for some time, I did some reading and others are starting to complain some. I am generally only going to use it for storage as I have other plans for VM and dockers. any nas software I should look at?

Do you have a SSD cache? If not have you considered setting that up to alleviate the write speed constraints on your shares while trying to read? (With cache UnRAID uses a job to periodically write changes back to disk at scheduled times)

If you are going to move, what are your constraints?

Do you need to be able to use mixed disks, or are you OK with using all same sized disks?

Does your budget allow to purchase all the required disks at once?

Are you ok with being constrained to 1 time upgrade, or do you need flexibility to add disks as needed?

Are you set on just software solutions, or are you considering hardware as well?

I believe the problem is I am transferring files from the cache to disk 9 for example (managed by unraid and the shares). At the same time data is being read off the same drive to go to various clients.

When I first got unraid there was no such thing as dockers and it was just myself. Now I have roomates, family and friends using plex and 4k content.

There was a plugin that scatters the data across multiple drives. Will give that a shot for now. can't remember the name.

I know about the have all the disks first before you setup the new system.

Have you checked your shares that you have the cache enabled? Also have you configured the mover schedule for some reasonable time like 3-4AM?

If Plex is your big thing and you have quite a few users, theres a tool called Tautulli which is an analytics script and will be able to give you information on when your lowest times are for Plex so you can set your mover schedule for that time.
