Upgrading PC need help

I am looking to upgrade My Pc as it is old. I did not personally build it so this will be my first experience Building/upgrading. My upgrade budget is $500 for CPU, Motherboard and Ram. I am also looking to upgrade my Graphics card in the near future. I will mainly be gaming and editing 4k video. Here are My Current Specs:

CPU Core i7 870

Motherboard ASUS P7P55D-E

GPU Evga Gtx 1050 (2gb Vram) Most recent upgrade 2yrs ago

PSU Corsair Builder 400 W 80+

Ram 20gb DDR3

Storage is in the PC part Picker list Here

I am looking to upgrade CPU, Motherboard and Ram as I mentioned earlier. I specked out an intel upgrade that you can see on the pc part picker. I chose intel because that is what I had previously, but I have heard that AMD often has better workstation performance so I also specked it out for AMD

CPU Ryzen 5 3600

Motherboard  ASUS Prime X470-PRO

Ram G.SKILL TridentZ RGB Series 16GB (same as in the PC part picker)

As for the Future Graphics card Upgrade I would like to get GTX 1660-Ti and a new PSU

So I would like to know if I should change a few things and weather I should chose AMD or Intel.

Every time I see a wolf, with a wolf name I shudder and hope it's not who I think it is.

Your list is private, so no one can see it.

What games do you play? As long as they're eSports or very easy to run titles, that video card should be fine, but it won't do 4k for AAA games.

The CPU is a good choice, but I'd also grab a cooler.

I'd also consider grabbing a new PSU, and, of course, wait until Black Friday before purchasing anything.

As for the Games I play some of my favorites are Just cause 4 and cities skylines which is very CPU intensive.

I do not have to be able to game in 4k only edit video in 4k as I only have 2 1080p 60hz monitors.

Cityskylines is one intensive CPU game. I have friends who exclusively play this game and they switched over to an AMD Ryzen 2700X just to have it run smoothly. You should be okay with this unless you have money to burn for the Ryzen 3700X.

I really think you need a bigger PSU. I wouldn't go anything less than 750W 80+ Bronze. It would be terrible to have this new cpu and run out of power for your graphics.

With the Gtx 1660 PC part picker says it wont go over 400w. I was thinking of getting a 500w PSU

750W is overkill, 600 is recommended if you want to upgrade in the future to beefier graphics cards with higher power requirements. Also, I'd recommend going Ryzen, as you will have a better upgradepath, the 9th series intel processors is the last on this socket while on ryzen you will at least see another generation on the AM4 socket if not even more, also you can save money as well especially on the high end on ryzen and if you get an x570 motherboard you also get extra features like PCIE 4.0 which may not be extremely relevant now but will make a difference in the future. I'd recommend a ryzen 5 3600 instead of the i5 and at least a b450 motherboard, hopefully b550 boards will also be released soon so look out for them. Also, you need a GPU upgrade as the ryzen 5 3600 will bottleneck your gtx 1050 really bad. You can get an rx 580 for around 100$ on the used market or 150$ new and is quite a powerfull graphics card.

I think the general consensus is an AMD CPU because if the SMT and through that benefits you get from everything else so the 3600 or the 3700X if the budget is higher. And no the Ryzen CPUs don't have integrated graphics only the APUs do they do nothing in your case.

Cheers and good luck! ?

I Cant afford a 3700x but is the 3600x a large advantage over the 3600 because the 3600x is within my budget.

Would a ASUS ROG STRIX B450-F be a better option over what I have listed above.

https://www.newegg.com/asus-rog-strix-b450-f-gaming/p/N82E16813119140

It really depends as usually more expensive motherboards like the strix b450 tend to have better cooling for the vrms and other components which can help with ryzen 3rd series as they are quite powerhungry but also helps if you want to overclock your chip. Also you need to remember that most b450 do not support 3rd gen ryzen out of the box meaning they would need a bios update for 3rd gen ryzen to work, now some boards will require you to have a cpu of a previous generation to do the update and some boards can do the update without the CPU, so that is one more thing to look out for. Like I previously said in the future there will be b550 boards available however there isn't a specific launch date for them. A popular b450 motherboard for ryzen 3000 cpu's seems to be the b450 tomahawk as it has good vrms but also a reasonable price so I'd recommend going for that.

MSI motherboards, at least the newer amd ones seem to be flashable without a cpu as seen in their video so I'd recommend choosing an MSI motherboard if you are a buying a b450.

Last thing you could do is getting an x570 motherboard but they do start at around 150$ and up

@Iron Wolf

Also, not sure if I mentioned anything about the ram yet, but I'd recommend getting at least 3200mhz ram and around 3600mhz at max, perhaps corsair vengeance as with the Trident Z RGB you are paying more for the "rainbow puke". 3200mhz kits are quite cheap and easily found for around the same price so ideally go for that.

If you don't really need the RGB on the G.Skill Trident Z for 2$ less you can get the G.Skill Ripjaws V 3600mhz 2x8gb kit at 77$ or the Corsair Vengeance LPX 3600mhz 16gb kit at 75$.

If you want the RGB you can have the G Skill Trident Z RGB 3200mhz at 90$ or the Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3200mhz at 85$ (both 2x8gb kits)

If you are willing to spend a little more to get 3600mhz and RGB you could get the G Skill Trident Z RGB at 3600 mhz for 100$ or the Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 3600mhz for 98$.

Edit: If you don't for the RGB don't get the Corsair Vengeance LPX as it has a higher CAS Latency of 18 compared to the Ripjaws which a CAS Latency of 16.

Also if you want the RGB 3600mhz kits remember that both the Trident Z and Corsair Vengeance RGB both have CAS Latency of 18. I believe you can "tighten" your ram timings but I'm not sure how far. Also I'm not sure either what would be the difference between a CAS Latency of 16 and a CAS Latency of 18

No that's not really a good deal the 2700x is usually cheaper.

I have heard that the 3600x does not have much of a performance advantage over the 3600 and that you should just save your money and buy a 3600. Is this true?

Yeah, there isn't really a huge difference Screenshot_20191104_152833_com.android.chrome.thumb.png.c09431857d5137539cf284d65ff3d1dd.png

Depends on the price difference, as you can claim a free game and 3 months of xbox games pass for pc with the 3600X.

for the motherboard I am looking into getting x570 as you suggested possibly the ASUS Prime X570-P for $160.

Also here is a summary of what I am currently decided on this may change

Motherboard ASUS Prime X570-P

Ram 16gb Corsair Vengeance RGB pro 3200mhz

In all honesty I don't know very much about the motherboard, but the ratings on the website don't say many good things about it.

Here's a list of x570 motherboards that fit in that budget

@Iron Wolf also at 170$ you have this https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16813144262?Description=x570&cm_re=x570-_-13-144-262-_-Product

An MSI MPG X570 GAMING PLUS which seems to have the best reviews out of them all with 194 total reviews and 5/5. Also it seems that there is a rare issue which you get if you are unlucky as in the board being DOA, or a part of the board like one of the pcie slots being DOA so I'd recommend, whatever board you get just do a check to see whether the motherboard has any issues, if so you can send it back for a replacement, repair or refund. (DOA= Dead On Arival)

I am trying to find an ASUS motherboard so I can have aurasync. so I might just wait until black Friday to see what I can afford.  I will still consider the MSI motherboard though.
