Hi, this is my first post so hopefully I'm doing this right!

I have the last of the MacBook Pro's before they got rid of all the ports and added just USB C.

This was great at first because I could still connect to everything whilst others had dongles.... however now times have changed!

A lot of things are now natively USB C (including the workstations at my work) and I now find myself unable to connect to a lot of things.

I have tried looking for dongles and adapters that turn USB C connections into other things such as mini displayport, but they don't seem to! Everything seems to be turning USB C into something else!

Can anyone help please!

mini displayport

i am sure these exist... (Apple actually sells them, so i am sure third party manufacturers would too)

but there are a lot of ports usb is replacing, i just assumed all the dongles had them covered

because if vga is still on dongle, mini displayport should definitely exist

You're kinda barking up the wrong tree. Nearly every monitor comes with DP, and by extension you can get DP/mDP cables anywhere that sells cables. What you might try is just connecting to a USB-C dock without the USB-C connector (eg a USB-A 3.0 to USB-C 3.0 cable) and see if you can use the USB hardware in the dock (you won't be able to use DP or TB ports unless you connect to a TB dock.) The 2016 MacBook Pro's have TB2 ports, so you can connect to Thunderbolt docks, even if they use USB-C with an appropriate cable. As for how well they will work, that is not something that can be answered really.

If you are trying to connect directly to a USB-C monitor, this will use the "DP Alternate mode" which means an adapter is certainly possible, though it may not be intended to be used that way.

Probably the path of least resistance is to have a mDP to DP (full sizE) or a mDP to HDMI adapter/cable and just plug those directly into the monitor. You may want to try the USB-A to USB-C cable to see if any of those will work, but it's almost a certainty that they will not send DP over it, so you might only be able to use Ethernet/Audio/USB-hub devices on docking stations, not the monitors.

okay i have news: this might be the one you're looking for, but it's gonna need more digging to find it (plus a USB-C female-female adapter if you can't remove the cable on the monitor)

this one isn't minidisplayport, but there's shouldn't be issues with going from full-sized to mini DP

EDIT: I'll leave the relevant thread here too, but READ IT CAREFULLY as everyone's experimenting with a few other types as well

EDITx2: oh wow this one's also hard to get, lol ,_, why does it feel like only two companies care?

This is what I mean.... it's strange! It seems like not much to ask for, especially in a world now there everything is heading towards USB C and no one has thought about compatibility with older machines.

For instance, USB C workstations are becoming more and more common, and charging cables are ditching USB A for USB C (and rightly so) but the question is how do people with older laptops connect!

I don't know.. here at work depending on the laptop, we have USB 3.0 Type-A docks, with video outputs in DVI, HDMI and DP as option. Or the laptop has a dock station that uses some connector under the laptop. Not use if those USB 3.0 Type-A  docks work on Macs.

So, I work for a hardware manufacturer that makes some stuff like this. Looking for mDP to USB-C female, for what exactly?

No one can accurately recommend anything without knowing that first. So, what are you trying to do, that involved male mDP to female USB-C? Once I know that, I can help out, and potentially explain why a cable/adapter like that does not exist.
