I7-8700k or I7 9700k

Ryzen's other advantage is not being on a dead platform. 4th gen Ryzen should still be in the same socket compatible with the same bunch of boards, while 9700k's only upgrade is the 9900k and variants. 10th gen won't be compatible with the same boards. Could go with older boards, especially those that can flash their BIOS on their own for 3rd gen compatiblity (MSI B450 ATX boards, MAX are pre-flashed)

There is also the cooling aspect,Ryzen comes with a good enough cooler, with Intel you need at least a high end Air cooler.

I've had my 4790k for 6~ years and would still keep it as its holding its own like a little champ! However, i want to upgrade and am going to. I know it sounds insane to go with Intel to save money ? but it generally is about £70 cheaper...surprisingly!

get Z390 to make sure it support 9700K out of the box...and at least not entry level. :)

RAM 3000 mhz minimum

Good luck :)

Thanks for the advice, and all the other help!

Both are good choice...prices on intel CPU i7 is decent and the performance is there...most softwares and games have better support for intel hardware imo.

I don't know man, i would be torn personally but if the prices are similar in the end i would game on 9700K.

8 core will last a long while for games.

@Kaine tyrie Talking about money, 3rd gen Ryzen 7 is like a 120w class CPU even if you overclock it, but 9700k will happily pull 200w when overclocked. In other words, you could get by with a Hyper 212 Black on the Ryzen 7, but you have to spend more on 9700k's cooler to get the most out of it.

No, as he already mentioned he is in possession of a 240mm rad.

AMD said there will be AM4 support throughout 2020 but after that it’s open. Assuming that OP won’t get in the need of upgrading in the next 2-3 years there will be new sockets on both sides at that time around. So saying that it’s better to buy something else because of future proofing eventough both sockets are EOL is quite unreasonable.

Higher core count + new generation is a big enough evidence then? You cant argue that the "roof" of LGA1151v2 is much lower than AM4, whether that will be useful is another problem that time will answer

if cable ties work for my big D15 (takes time for the bracket to arrive) it will work for a waterblock, the heatsink weighs so much more

Why did this thread turn into yet another AMD vs Intel war?
I feel like if people on LTT had their way, Intel would cease to exist as a company.

He asked about 8th vs 9th gen chips, not 9700k vs ryzen.

You can't deny that Ryzen is very competitive and better value.

i do agree with this, but someone just mentioned an AMD equivalent and i continued the conversation because i was thinking about one also and wanted some extra input without starting another thread.

I like ryzen and I was considering it until AMD lied about the boost clocks (even buildzoid rambled about being unhappy about that and he called amd out on it), and the entire Destiny 2 problem...I mean, that will scare gamers away in droves...

No gamer has been affected by disabled security mitigations on Intel processors but that entire performance loss by having them enabled is a MAJOR issue.  People want to overclock another 100 mhz for that 2% boost, just to have mitigations erase it?  Yikes.
