Ethernet only connecting through switch

We just bought a new cat6 ethernet cable, We have a 10 port gigabit ethernet switch. When I plug my ethernet cable into the switch, it works, however it's capped at 100 mbps. When I try and plug it directly into the modem, It gets no connection at all. If you need more information, just ask. Thanks

Probably a bad cable, you need all 8 pins for gigbit, but only 4 for 100m.

Did you try a different cable?

We only have two cables, the old cat5 and the new cat6. I can try plugging in the old cat5 in and see if that works

sounds more like a negotiation issue. You could try manually setting your speed/duplex on your computer to gigabit and see what it does. To do this, follow these steps:

Open Control panel > Network and Sharing Center> Change Adapter Settings > Right click on your eithernet adapter and click properties > Configure > then depending on the adapter it could be a few different things. For me with an intel adapter it will be under Link Speed. For most everything else, it will be under Advanced > then find Speed & Duplex and manually set it to 1.0Gbps Full Duplex.

This also didn't work, it continues to say network cable unplugged

mmmk, so something is causing it to negotiate at 100mbps, not 1 gig. If this didnt work, then you may need to manually set the speed/duplex on the switch port or tell it to no negotiate and let the PC set the speed/duplex of the connection.

How can I do this?

Its only doable if its a managed switch. If its a managed switch, then you would need to login and configure the port. if its an unmanaged switch, AKA Dumb switch, you wont be able to do this.

So, basically I'm screwed, and I need to purchase a 50$ cable.

Maybe, have you tried other devices with that cable and see if they get the 1Gbps speed?
