I have a M5A78L-M plus Mobo and want to find out a good option for an upgrade as i am looking on websites and they are just giving me comparisions as aposed to what i can put on the mobo without killing it i am only looking to upgrade CPU and dont wanna change the mobo unless absolutely necessary as i am going to upgrade GPU also.

Any help with be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

AM3+ is a dead platform, you will need to upgrade your motherboard if you want to get decent performance increase.

That motherboard can support up to 125 TDP max FX cpu. The list are here:

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A78L-M-PLUS-USB3/HelpDesk_CPU/

Your CPU probably the best it could support.

I suggest upgrade your GPU if you want to play in higher FPS.

That cpu is slow but still can play most games.

I would not recommend this, it will bottleneck modern GPUs.

The FX 8350 is about the best you can get for that motherboard. Other CPUs compatible are  the 8370 or 9590, just higher clocked versions of the same CPU, so no real major benefit. Ryzen is where it's at these days.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Bla bla bla, so what? You can't kill GPU with bottleneck.

Who said he will go buy a 2080TI?

No bro, you don't need to just to play the game. The minimum requirements are FX6300 your cpu is better.

What's your GPU?

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  • MINIMUM:
    • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
    • OS: WINDOWS® 7, 8, 8.1, 10 (64-bit required)
    • Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-4460, 3.20GHz or AMD FX™-6300
    • Memory: 8 GB RAM
    • Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 760 or AMD Radeon™ R7 260x (VRAM 2GB)

If you want to upgrade upgrade everything, not just the motherboard, your system is a dead end.

There's no point upgrading your PC, better processors will also require new motherboard and new memory (you have DDR3, modern stuff uses DDR4)

You can upgrade to socket AM4, you can get a motherboard with the B450 chipset and that makes it possible to buy AMD Ryzen processors. You would need DDR4 memory, ideally at 3000, 3200 or 3600 Mhz - Ryzen processors like high frequencies.

The minimum I would upgrade to would be a Ryzen 1600, which would cost around 100$

A decent motherboard that would allow you to upgrade to Ryzen 3xxx series processors in the future is around 70$

16 GB DDR4 is around 60-80$

You can probably sell the 8350+mb+ram as a kit for around 100$ on eBay / Craigslist / local listings

Not a very mature response. I didn't say either of those things. If his CPU bottlenecks enough then a GPU upgrade will have zero effect on his gaming performance.

not very mature of you either since we dont know what GPU he's using atm. If it's bad and old enough the 8350 can still take a GPU upgrade

I am using an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB

Ah well, board and CPU upgrade can't wait that long. Even a GTX 1660 (not 1060) can see bottleneck at times with the FX 8 core (if not all of the time), and that's about 10% faster at stock and 15% when overclocked comparing to the 1060 6GB (another 5-10% better than the 1060 3GB).

1060 3GB tho should still be more than sufficient to play Monster Hunter World at 1080p 60fps target with mix of high and medium preset, so to really make a difference you'll be looking at the RTX 2060, minimum. If you already have the game but low settings can't help with the low frame rate, check if the CPU usage is high, you may be CPU bottlenecked and should upgrade the CPU instead of the GPU.
