What happens when the 2080 ti outputs more frames then the monitors maximum refresh rate?

Hi guys.

 

I have a quick question regarding gaming on a very high end card like the 2080 ti with a monitor that has a maximum refresh rate of 144hz.

As we all know the 2080 ti is more a 4k card, but what happens when this card is used to game on a monitor with gsync, and the total number of frames in a particular game is higher that the monitor refresh rate?
For example let's say the 2080 ti outputs on average 200FPS but the monitor only has 144hz refresh rate. 
Does the g-sync runs into any trouble trying to sync the GPU frames with the monitors?
Is there more stuttering, or choppiness to the percived gameplay.
I know g-sync monitors have a set frame rate window where g-sync works. If someone can enlighten me on this topic would be great. Thanks

Gsync works from 30 to 144 fps.

If you are pushing more frames than the monitor refresh rate then adaptive sync (g-sync or freesync) gets disable and it does cause screen tearing.

 

You should either use v-sync+g-sync if you want butter smooth gaming or fast sync alone if you want more fps than your monitor refresh rate.

G-Sync does nothing at that refresh rate. It only actually does anything in it's range:

May vary a bit by monitor (or that could be FreeSync that does that), but yeah ^ 

If it's out of range then G-Sync doesn't do anything at all.

It may cause screen tearing,but from my experience it's rarely happening,

And when it's happening you can lock the FPS or enable V-Sync.

Your GPU will use less power if you enable V-Sync as it will not have to work hardest to produce frames it doesn't have to show. In return, temperatures go down. 

 

As other people mentioned, you will get screen tearing unless you have G-Sync.

 

G-Sync has no range, it just works. Free sync however does.

 

I dont count 30 and below because people with GSync displays dont play at that frame rate.
