ryzen 5 2600 vs core i5 9400f

I want to upgrade my core i5 7400 which is starting to feel slow with modern titles

My PC has a gtx 1070 and 24gb of 2400mhz ram (8+16)

i want to upgrade my CPU and mobo to something that will run games fine at 144hz 1080p , i play mostly bf5, overwatch, cities skylines, csgo, civ 6 and a few indie games.

also i live in australia so prices are abit messed up and we have a very small used market here and my budget is around 300 aud

 

after some research my options are:

Ryzen 5 2600 - $200 +cheapest B450M mobo- $110      total 310 ish

core i5 9400f - $225 + cheapest b360 mobo-$105          total 330ish

 

which CPU will bring the best performance in game for the best value?

also will the 2400mhz ram hurt the ryzen too much?

any other CPU suggestions?

I would go with the r5 2600 myself. More threads since it has SMT. Base/boost is nearly identical. You may lose a small amount of FPS (talking less than 5 fps in most cases) compared to intel, but have a longer life due to the multi threading capabilities of the 2600 over the 9400f.

My recommendation is the Ryzen 2600. A better well rounded chip in my opinion. I used to have one, they are great performers and overclock very well.

If you have to change board just go with a 3600x or 3700x. 

 

Get a b450 from the latest versions I think its the max versions and just flash the bios to a more recent one and put a 3700x in it. 

 

Best upgrade you can do.

If your on a budget and just want the best for as cheap as possible the 2600 is a better value and can be overlocked fair enough, but the thing is if you buy the cheapest B450 motherboard you will stuck with Asrock or Gigabyte's DS3H and it's junk at overclocking anything other then a 2400G, I would spend an additional 25-50$ to get a good motherboard.

 

There is no need for a 3700X, the 2nd gen Ryzen is still a good value because they lowered the price a fair amount.
