Should i switch to AMD?

I have an intel core i3 8100 and an intel z370p d3. I have seen some of the specs for my pc and feel like i need to haul a bunch of new parts in. I have seen a cheap Ryzen 5 3600x and seen that it's a good deal. What motherboards are compatiable with 3rd gen Ryzens? Should I switch from blue to red team? Are there any great cheap deals at the moment? I've got 8 gigs of RAM and a GTX 1060 3gb (I will be switching to a GTX 980 soon) I am a gamer

Any more info please specify!

If you already have a Z370 board, it may be cheaper for you to go with a six-core coffee lake CPU, assuming their current pricing is in line with their relative performance in the current market.

Having said that, never upgrade based on specs: better pay attention to performance. Are you getting what you want from your PC? Would you get significantly more with any given upgrade? Or by the time you balance everything out, you'll end up with practically a new PC, several hundred dollars less, and a substantial amount of additional power you didn't really care all that much for?

Maybe it will be easier to provide advice if you tell us what are you hoping to achieve in terms of user experience after swapping parts.

I have a Ryzen 2600 and I am using my old 1060GTX 3GB while my new GPU is in the mail. When my 1060 is at 100% RAM and load, my Ryzen 2600 is only running at 50% load. I should take a screen shot for you but I'm going to bed. The R5 2600 is heaps cheaper than the 3600 and uses the same motherboard & DDR4 ram. Wait for black friday clearance sales. Ryzen second gen will be at bargain prices to get them off the shelves.

ye i'd say get the 3600 non X variant, any x570 mobo or any am4 msi mobo that has flash bios button if you want a cheaper option that needs bios flash,

Wouldn't a second gen Ryzen be out of date? Also I can splash my cash, around 400 pounds if need be. I do have other stuff to sell if I need to make money

CPU: 3600 non X, the X is just slightly better.

Motherboard : Get a B450 or X470. with an upgraded bios.

The blue team going to change the socket, so any cpu you get now, will be stuck to 9900k.

The 2nd is just 10% slower but the price is 40% off. I say that's a bargain.

why even bother with CPU upgrade, just upgrade the GPU. 1060 3gb to GTX 980 isn't a good choice tho since the 980 is only a little faster than the 1060 6gb with 4gb video memory, in other words a small gain.

  • I wouldn't get a GTX 980, unless you're getting it super cheap. The GTX 1660 is significantly better.
  • Wait for Black Friday, see if there are any sales.
  • Might be worth seeing what you can get a used 8700 for. It'd be a lot better, and really the costs shouldn't be much more than going to Ryzen considering you'd need a new motherboard as well.

The 2600 is a fair bit weaker at 1080p though. I don't see Ryzen dropping much lower than it is now...unless it's still high in the UK.

To be fair, I don't see Ryzen going for another gen on this socket either.

It's true, but the lifetime of AM4 still better than Coffee Lake, at least you can get up to 16 cores when you need to.

You can scale up another 10 cores without changing the motherboard, you can't do that with Intel.

By the time that's needed it'd be better to invest in a new platform.
