New monitor came with a dead pixel, should i swap it for a new one?

goshot

So i bought a new monitor - AOC 24V2Q, and when i came back home i found a dead pixel on the screen. I didn't see it at the store when i was testing it.

It doesn't bug me much, i only see it if i specifically look for it.

Should i still swap it for a new one, and hope that one doesn't have a burned/dead pixel?

Is there any danger to having a burned/dead pixel? I've heard rumors that if you have a dead pixel, it can spread and you'll have more dead pixels on screen. Is this true? When do dead pixels spread? How fast do they spread?

Yes. You bought a brand-new monitor. It has a defect. It would be stupid to *not* return it.

The dead pixel isn’t contagious so to speak. There are some temporary fixes that may work, such as flashing colours or rubbing the pixel, but the only way to fix it is to replace the pixel (not realistically possible), or replacing the LCD. Return it.

Read into the quality control policy. Screens are allowed to leave the factory with a certain quantity of dead pixels sometimes and it wouldn’t be grounds for a return for that purpose.

Most of the time these days the larger brands will go for 1-2 dead pixels as long as they’re not in the center region of the screen.

I do have a 14 day period for returning the product starting from the day i bought the monitor so i can still swap it even though i have a dead pixel i think.

It's just 1 pixel near the edges of the screen and i almost don't see it and it's somewhat of a hasse to replace it, since i'ts an hour trip to get to the shop and i gotta wait 1-2 days for the new monitor to arrive at the shop so during that period i can't use my PC. Do you think it's still worth it?

If it doesn't bug you, don't worry too much about it, but I would still look into returning it. I couldn't live with it and I'd be pissed that my brand-new monitor has a defect.

I would absolutely return it, as it would annoy the crap out of me.

As said above by @Genwyn though, there's a chance they won't accept the return due to margins/tolerances in manufacturing.

Most manufacturers/stores will follow the ISO 9241-307 standard for dead pixels.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_9241#ISO-9241-302,_303,_305,_307:2008_pixel_defects

Looks like AOC themselves adhere to ISO 9241-307 Class 1:

https://eu.aoc.com/en/warranty-information

TL;DR:

Per 1 million pixels, you monitor is allowed to have:

image.png.a5891b2af6ff7c4de82b306799ae2684.png

And still be considered good.

Your monitor has about 2 million pixels, meaning 1 black pixel does not fall under the normal warranty they have.

Of course nothing is stopping the shop/aoc from still honoring 'Class 0' like warranty policies (no dead pixels) and replacing it.

Sometimes just returning the monitor works too, which means you won't have to deal with all the crap I mentioned above. You could consider it un-ethical.. The store could check the monitor (since the packaging is opened) and discover the dead pixel.. At which point they could invalidate the return and start up the warranty procedure and not trust you anymore..

So it's really up to you whether you will pursue the warranty claim, return claim, or deal with it.
