Is my HDD dying?

Yes. There is nothing special on it, so I don't mind.

Take it apart, use the Disk as a mirror or something. The magnets in there might come in handy.

So a couple of days ago my HDD began making this noise. At first I thought it was mounting, so I took it out and re-mounted everything. But I didn't help. I took it out and booted PC with HDD in my hand (Yeah I know, not the best idea), but it was still making this noise. Its not always making this noise though. If I turn out on its side, or shake it, noise sometimes goes away.

Should I just throw it out? This HDD is 8 years old. I use it for junk storage.

Two things:

First off, your avatar is 20% cooler.

Second, never shake a HDD.

If it works, I would say run it into the ground, back up anything you want off of it.

if you don't like the noise, do the same thing, but then take it to a sandpit or somewhere and put a few rounds of .45 through it.

I normally use Slugs on my HDD but .45 is good too.

Wait, you're shaking a powered-on and running HDD?

Hand, n. A singular instrument worn at the end of the human arm and commonly thrust into somebody’s pocket.

Doesn't sound bad to me. Though I would consider making a backup of all data and replacing it, since 8 years is much.

Unfortunately its a bit difficult to get hold of a gun here in Ireland, let alone shoot something with it.
