I've been trying to add 3 external displays (all 1080p) from my laptop (Surface book 2 15in). I have successfully extended to 2 using the usb c port (I don't believe its a thunderbolt port) but wish to extend to a third. Are there any potions that don't cost over $100. I can find a usb c to 3 hdmi for about 140 or just buy a docking station dell offers for about $120. I'm just surprised how much these options cost. How does splitting to 2 hdmi ports to 3 make the cost go from $30 to $140? I think I can use the normal usb ports to drive a monitor but I was wanting to drive all 3 using the single usb c port.

You're effectively asking for an "inexpensive cable" (with no circuitry control or display logic) to do something it's not designed to do...

Since the Surface Book 2 doesn't support Thunderbolt, you're stuck using a dock or adapter with a DisplayLink chipset in it if you wish to run more screens. Best to replace the device & monitors with ones that better suit your needs (ie: device with the capability of connecting to 3 displays via Thunderbolt daisy chaining, and monitors that support daisy chaining).

If that's not an option, your next best solution is to buy a dock that supports more monitors.
