Can a Q6600 run AAA games?

Go to solution Solved by Fasauceome,

run? most, yes. enjoyably? no, unless 20 fps appeals to you.

Can a Q6600 run most AAA games? (for example: The Witcher, GTA V, Madden 20, etc.)

my terrible laptop: CPU: i5-2450M at 2.60 ghz base (however goes up to 3.30 ghz on any steam game i run. odd.) GPU: integrated Quadro NVS 4200m (garbage. the reason that this is terrible.) 6GB of ram, 300GB HDD. refurbished Dell Latitude Esomething. got it for like 140 bucks on amazon.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

I run minecraft at 4 fps. 20 fps is godly speed for me.

do you have the Q6600 right now, or perhaps getting it for a good price?

If they're old enough, sure (e.g. GTA 5). No AVX support tho, so any new-ish AAA game will feel like dragging yourself through mud. In AAA games with anti-hack software envolving virtual machines, it's more like quicksand.

If you’re looking into buying a super cheap old system for modern gaming, the Q6600’s time has passed. Get an Optiplex 790, preferably a fat one, with an i5 2400 or i7 2600. They’re under 100$ on eBay and substantially more capable than lga 775 platforms even at their best.

Would an Optiplex 790 case fit a decent GPU (decent as in at least GTX 1050 TI or RX 570, at best GTX 1660

you'll realistically need to upgrade the psu on it to comfortably run a gpu alongside the existing components, so count on having to switch cases too.

not sure I know what I'm talking about

Make sure to get the mid tower version of the case case.  Also, shoot for i7+8gb of ram.   The extra threads will help stretch its useful life considerably.

It will look something like this... and it can fit a standard PSU.  Add a cheap ~$30 500w PSU and you can run pretty much any GPU you want.  SATA ports are in a bad place though, so blower cards are probably not going to fit without some work.   You can also cut out the bottom drive bay to fit longer cards.

Found something similar to that, found a 600W PSU from EVGA I like aswell, however with only 4gb of ram. Since I have little to no experience with any form of Optiplex desktop, how easy/hard is it to upgrade RAM aswell as change GPU?

Its the same as any other system.  Just buy the standard speed/timing memory.  For i7-2000 series, that will be DDR3 1333.

For the GPU, if you get an "ITX" sized card (no longer than the motherboard is wide), you dont have to change anything internally.   At worst, you will have to get 90 degree SATA cables.

Worst case scenario you can swap to a regular case.

I have one of these and it works great with minimal modification in aaddition to being extremely cheap...

The only change I have made to mine is cutting out the metal grille behind the front panel and in front of the fan.

Oh, and I removed the metal plate that has the extra SSD mounts on it (a few screws are all that holds it in), this allows pretty much any GPU to fit.
