I don't see any other threads on this, this thread isn't one on what it is. But saying anything about the implications of it is an understatement. 

 

All I can say is, their security is definitely going to be beefed up. And it's a (hopefully) good way to start to close off this year.

The mathematical problem Google solved with the quatum computer (Which could not be solved by any normal computer) did not have any practical uses. I've also read that they think that it will take up to 10 years more before it can really be put in use. But the past told us that it can go quick in development.

I did mean to respond to your comment, summit would be able to complete the calculations - but it would take 10,000 years while Google did it with this chipset in 3 minutes and 20 seconds. It's a little scary the power the technology has, we'll see where it goes lol

R.I.P any encryption 1800-2030 those are mathematical problem in fact but just way to hard for any computer to crack in any practical amount of time. But quantum computer will probably do it in hours if not minutes. That is what scares me about it.

Quantum computers are still a ways off but I will bet all my money the government is the first customer. Seeing how much they spend and the types of computers they buy current'u modern encryption isn't safe. Also these machines aren't listed publicly but they would easily be on the top of the 500 list of supercomputers

I mean, once the American or Russian government gets their hands on this they'll probably just use some sort of AI to design an encryption architecture-that or it'll lead to some sort of cyberwarefare in the mean time.

Haha they are already working on encryption that can handle quantum computers. But knowing that many people still use TELNET while there has been SSH for ages tells me that this won't be wide used by the time quantum computers come around. Still many (password) databases on the internet that don't even use encryption at all.

The issue that I have with this test is: whether or not the test that was ran on SUMMIT was optimized for traditional computation to achieve the same result, or if the logic tree was left as is from running in a quantum environment in order to inflate the results?
