Headphones/ Mic combo jack as Line-In?

My laptop has a combo jack for a headset and I'd like to use it as a line in so I can hear audio from my Nintendo Switch. Seeing as this can be used for a mic, I assumed I could just plug an aux cord into my Switch, and then into the combo port, but that doesn't seem to work. Do I need an adapter for this, or is there just some setting that I'm missing?

You probably need adapter that separates it to mic and headphones. Based on my own experience. Then you could use mic and virtual audio cables to get it looped to your headphones. Or whatever you had in mind.
