Looking for laptop recommendations

heej

Hello everyone!

I'm looking for a new laptop, hopefully something that will be good for the next 4 to 5 years. I'll be using it for university, watching movies, Photoshop/Lightroom (and maybe some video editing), as well as some gaming. My must haves would be at least 16GB RAM (something upgradeable would be nice) and a dedicated GPU. Definitely a 15 inch display as well, it's really hard for me to go back to something smaller since I got my current 15 inch laptop. Purchasing in Malaysia, preferably nothing more than 8000MYR (about 1900USD). I'm quite interested in these two laptops, both with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.

  • Zenbook 15 UX533FD (i7-8565U, GTX1050 MAX Q)
  • XPS 15 7590 (i7-9750H, GTX 1650)

It would be great to get your comments and recommendations, I'm open to other options as well. Thanks!

thickness and weight limits? Because those you mentioned are thermal throttle hells. That's what happens when there isnt room for a sufficiently large heatsink.

The ZenBook is going to be underpowered for what you need and the XPS has severe thermal and power issues making it borderline unusable for anything more demanding than Facebook

Thickness doesn't matter to me at all, but something below 2.5kg would be good. Slightly flexible about the weight though. I hear that's a common problem with compact laptops.

Oh gosh. I've heard that it gets toasty but didn't know it was to that extent. Do you have any recommendations?

It's not that bad, it just doesnt beat the quad core CPU option because the H CPUs have to throttle themselves whenever they try to show their power.

  • XPS 15 7590 (i7-9750H, GTX 1650)

It would be great to get your comments and recommendations, I'm open to other options as well. Thanks!

Here are a few models that I recommend based on your needs:

Custom Built Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (2nd Gen) 20QV001AUS Workstation - 15.6" FHD IPS - i7-9750H - GTX 1650 Max-Q

Custom Built MSI GS65 8SE Stealth-007 - 15.6" FHD 144Hz - i7-8750H - RTX 2060

EVOC High Performance Systems 16GK5 -15.6" FHD 144Hz- i7-9750H - RTX 2070 Max-Q

Custom Built Dell XPS 15 7590 - 15.6" 4K OLED Non-Touch / 4K IPS Touch - i7-9750H - GTX 1650

Custom Built Dell G7 15 7590 - 15.6" FHD 144Hz / FHD 240Hz - i7-9750H - RTX 2060 / 2070 Max-Q / 2080 Max-Q - 60WHr Battery

I recommend you get it from HIDevolution and in the laptop configurator, you can customize it to your needs in terms of RAM and SSDs and most importantly, choose "Thermal Grizzly Conducotnaut + Fujipoly Extreme Thermal pads", that 90 USD upgrade alone reduces temps by a whooping 15C which is a must in today's laptop which sport these beefy CPUs.

Plus, HIDevolution's quality control and customer service is superb and you get lifetime tech support for free. You can also choose to have your warranty upgraded to the prepaid shipping warranty which means if anything goes wrong, they will pay for shipping back and forth to get your laptop and have it serviced then returned back to you.

If you email donald@hidevolution.com who was the salesman I dealt with, he might be able to offer you a small discount like he did for me.

This one is pretty dope https://amzn.to/2NrjAX0  upgradeable as well . Tell me if its too expensive or nah.

It looks good, still within my budget. I noticed it doesn't have a webcam (I know, pretty minor thing), I do need it as I have video conferences for uni + my intern job. Thank you for the recommendation though, I will keep it on my radar.

I see, that's sad. I just hope I don't get something that melts itself  : ' )

Thank you everyone for your recommendations, I'll take some time to check them out first. ((I'm still open to recommendations!))

I'm bored so i found one more option(also pretty sick, actually maybe even more sick than the one above  xD https://amzn.to/30yNeM5

You can ask me what ever you want since i have nothing to do ...

Hey guys, I did some looking around based on your recommendations. I changed my focus a bit to include heavier/larger laptops, since I won't be working on the go all the time.

As of now, I've narrowed it down to the ASUS ROG Strix series and Illegear. Not sure I'll be going for the Zenbook Pro, since it's not upgradeable and the 16GB version is quite out of my budget. Thought of going for the Hero III.

Also looked at Illegear (Onyx), similar specs but about 500 to 1000 MYR cheaper. Heard the keyboard and sound isn't that nice, though. Planning to visit Illegear to check their stuff out in person. I really liked the Hero though, might end up getting that.

Thanks again everyone! Really appreciate your help.
